If someone were to ask, “What’s the hottest soccer manga right now?”, what would your answer be? Would it be Blue Lock, which is currently hitting new heights with its World Cup arc? Or perhaps Ao Ashi, which magnificently concluded its run in August? My answer, without a doubt, would be Aoku Somero.

The Underachieving Younger Brother Aims for the World’s Best Again

This captivating series centers on Hidaka Soushi, the younger brother of Hidaka Kouya, who is hailed as the “treasure of Japanese soccer.” Soushi, once labeled an “underachiever,” confronts his past struggles as he strives to become the world’s top soccer player.

In middle school, in stark contrast to his older brother Kouya, who was making waves overseas, Soushi never managed to secure a spot as a regular player. Feeling a lack of talent, he was on the verge of giving up on soccer entirely. However, a fateful reunion with his brother reignites his passion, prompting him to step back onto the pitch.

Soushi chooses Shou Ryou Koukou as his new stage, a rising school with ambitions for the national tournament. At Shou Ryou, Soushi encounters a colorful cast of companions and rivals, growing not only as an individual but also as a dedicated soccer player.

This is a passionate youth soccer manga that equally portrays talent and effort, glory and setbacks. It’s a powerful recommendation not only for soccer enthusiasts but also for anyone who loves gritty, straightforward sports narratives that truly highlight unwavering determination.

The Ultimate Brother Duo, The Battle Against the Golden Generation – Every Scene is Heart-Pounding

One of Aoku Somero‘s greatest charms is undoubtedly the depiction of the brothers as the “ultimate brother duo.” While many stories lean towards a “brother vs. brother” dynamic, Aoku Somero portrays them as a pair who fight alongside each other.

Despite occasional clashes, their mutual trust and unwavering support for one another radiate the intense passion and deep bonds characteristic of the best sports manga.

At the heart of the narrative is the compelling progression of the “underachieving younger brother rising to the top.” This isn’t a convenient tale of hidden talent suddenly blossoming; instead, it showcases consistent, grueling practice meticulously accumulating into undeniable skill.

Soushi’s journey—as he discovers his strengths and tirelessly dedicates himself to improvement—is absolutely irresistible for any fan of sports manga.

Furthermore, Shou Ryou Koukou itself is a team brimming with charisma. From dependable seniors to teammates who push each other to excel, every character is distinctly unique, making the team’s strong unity palpable as you read.

A particularly thrilling detail is the decision to entrust Shou Ryou’s coveted number 10 jersey not to Kouya, but to a third-year senior. While Kouya wore the number 10 during the summer Inter-High preliminaries, the moment he later passes that number to his senior speaks volumes about the team’s deep trust and mutual respect.

Though the specific details aren’t explicitly shown, the palpable atmosphere of Kouya recognizing and the entire team trusting that senior conveys a profound depth that is quintessentially Aoku Somero.

The presence of rival schools is also indispensable to this story. Especially noteworthy is the “Golden Generation (Eldorado),” a group of five players considered the strongest of their age.
While not all of them have appeared yet, their strength, depicted at key moments, is truly “absolute.” The anticipation of seeing Shou Ryou Koukou, and the brothers Soushi and Kouya, battle against these formidable rivals, each seemingly dominating their respective positions, is incredibly exciting.

My Favorite Scene I Want to Introduce, Even With Spoilers

※The following text contains spoilers for those who have not yet read the series. Please proceed with caution.

My personal favorite scene is the one-on-one confrontation between Leonardo Jade, a member of the “Golden Generation (Eldorado),” and Soushi, depicted in Chapter 107.

Leonardo is an absolute defensive player whom even Soushi’s older brother, Kouya, had never managed to beat one-on-one. Throughout the match, Soushi and the Shou Ryou team repeatedly challenged him but were continuously thwarted, overwhelmed by his impenetrable defense.

Then, in the true final one-on-one of the closing moments of the match, just when everyone expected him to be stopped again, Soushi unleashed everything he had accumulated. He broke through Leonardo, scoring a goal. In that moment, as he overcame an absolute wall and found the net, it was a profound testament to how his tireless efforts had truly borne fruit.

This scene is far more than just a scoring play. It’s not merely about “surpassing his brother” or “proving his talent”; it’s an emblematic moment that signifies Soushi’s own remarkable growth.
The first time I read it, I got goosebumps and couldn’t help but re-read that panel countless times. It was a moment that made my hands tremble with excitement, feeling as though all his past efforts were instantly rewarded.

Summary

Aoku Somero is a soccer manga that directly confronts the power of accumulated effort, not just innate talent or raw genius. What you find in its pages isn’t flashy special moves or superhuman plays, but the sight of players relentlessly chasing the ball, even when battered and bruised. That gritty realism is the series’ greatest appeal.

Soushi, who once nearly gave up on soccer, tirelessly rises again and again in his quest to catch up to his brother, Kouya. His journey delivers a powerful message to us, the readers: “effort never betrays.”

Aoku Somero is a must-read not only for soccer fans but for anyone who is wholeheartedly dedicating themselves to something. The national tournament arc has just begun, and there’s no doubt that the story will only intensify from here. We highly encourage you to witness the conclusion of this thrilling narrative with your own eyes.
