Kusuriya no Hitorigoto is based on the popular light novel series written by Hyuga Natsu and published under “Hero Bunko.” The series has also been adapted into manga serialized in “Big Gangan” and “Sunday GX,” boasting a cumulative total of over 40 million copies sold. The second season of the TV anime began airing in January 2025.

The ABEMA special program “Kyuchu Inokori Danshikai SP” was broadcast on May 16th. The ABEMA special program titled “Kyuchu Inokori Danshikai SP” welcomed Ootsuka Takeo (voice of Jinshi), Konishi Katsuyuki (voice of Gaoshun), Tachibana Tatsumaru (voice of Basen), and Toyonaga Toshiyuki (voice of Rahan). With pre-show talk of “let’s go with a boys’ school vibe,” the first-ever Kusuriya no Hitorigoto boys’ gathering kicked off in ultra-high tension.

Toyonaga-san, who plays Rahan and only recently appeared in Episode 42 (which aired just before the program), happily mentioned, “Though I’ve only appeared in one episode in the anime itself, I was briefly in the opening sequence, and it seems viewers have already reacted to that.”

Looking Back at the Story’s Evolution

The program started with a segment looking back at the previous episodes of Kusuriya no Hitorigoto. Seeing the character relationship chart displayed on screen, Konishi-san commented with deep sentiment, “It’s grown so much! It was a bit simpler in Season 1, wasn’t it?” This perspective comes from someone who’s been involved since the early parts of the story.

Ootsuka-san remarked, “Up until now, he was just a mysterious eunuch, but finally, the words ‘Imperial Prince Huazui Yue’ have appeared,” referring to Jinshi’s true identity being revealed. He also added a comment sparking curiosity about future interactions, saying, “Since Rakan and Rahan are adoptive father and son, that means (Rahan) is also related to Maomao, right?”

Sharing Love for Their Characters

Tachibana-san and Toyonaga-san, participating in the special for the first time, spoke about their respective characters. Tachibana-san described Basen affectionately as “stubborn and inflexible, but fundamentally a really good guy.” He also added, “Getting flicked on the head by Gaoshun-papa and showing those parent-child moments is a lot of fun.” To this, Konishi-san, who plays Gaoshun, gently added, “He’s an awkward kid,” and “He’s a kid who tries his best, please look kindly upon him,” leading to a heartwarming exchange fitting for actors playing a father and son.

About Rahan, Toyonaga-san revealed he received the shocking explanation, “He’s a pervert who’s good with numbers.” He also mentioned being influenced by Kirimoto Takuya-san, who plays his adoptive father Rakan, saying, “I watched Kirimoto-san’s approach in the studio and tried to inherit some of that essence when acting.”

Excitement Over Viewer Comments

Next, the program moved to the “ABEMA Comment Ranking” corner. ABEMA Anime Channel’s official X account is currently publishing the top 3 most commented scenes for each episode. In this corner, they reviewed the scenes that ranked 1st for each episode. The four voice actors agreed with the viewer comments, saying things like “The comments have great sense!” and “It shows everyone is curious about the same things!” However, they were surprised by some unexpected rankings. They were particularly surprised that the heartwarming scene in episode 39 where Maomao feeds her finished ice to the eunuchs ranked higher than the shocking scene in episode 40 where the revived Suirei reunites with Maomao. Tachibana-san analyzed, “(For serious scenes) maybe everyone was just engrossed in watching and couldn’t comment,” which the others agreed with.

The segment concluded with great excitement, just like a boys’ school, over the cave scene featuring Maomao and Jinshi, which took both 1st and 2nd place. Comments like “They’re so close!!” and “Ahhhhhhh! I wanted to hug them!” were voiced.

Testing Their Skills in a Tasting Game

The final segment was titled “Maomao Can Figure It Out, But Can the Imperial Court Stay-Behind Group Rank This?!” The idea was that even without Maomao, the poison tester, they should be able to distinguish between different tastes. They played a game where they had to identify the ordinary item versus the high-class item for various themes. A rather surreal scene unfolded as the four VAs lined up wearing blindfolds designed like Maomao and Jinshi’s eyes, and the tasting began.

In the first round, “Mushrooms,” Ootsuka-san and Toyonaga-san chose B, while Konishi-san and Tachibana-san chose A, splitting the answers. Tachibana-san explained his reasoning, “It tasted like something I hadn’t eaten before. If I haven’t eaten it, it must be high-class, right?” His reverse logic proved correct, and he got it right. In the second round, “Honey,” they all agreed it was easy and selected A, which was correct. For the final round, “Water,” only Ootsuka-san chose B, guessing, “I haven’t really drunk this kind before, so it must be the expensive one.” The three who chose A commented things like “It was easy to drink” and “I could taste something,” but the correct answer was surprisingly B, making Ootsuka-san the sole winner of that round.

Ultimately, Ootsuka-san, Konishi-san, and Tachibana-san each earned 2 points, making the three of them, excluding Toyonaga-san, the champions.

Closing Messages

At the end of the program, each cast member delivered a message to the viewers. Toyonaga-san commented, “From here on, the story will develop into deeper territory, so I hope you look forward to seeing how Rahan-kun navigates it.” Tachibana-san added, “The story is going to get more serious in the latter half. You’ll see sides of the characters you haven’t seen before, and there are still characters yet to appear, so please look forward to it.”

Konishi-san encouraged viewers, “Please try writing comments yourselves! When the story progresses further, I’d love to do a segment like this again and look at everyone’s comments.” Ootsuka-san wrapped up, “We’re halfway through the second cour of Season 2 now, and I’m sure everyone is curious about what happens next.
