May 25th is “My Car Day” in Japan. It originates from the founding anniversary of Yanase, a company that sells imported cars, and was established with the goal of promoting the spirit of cherishing one’s car.
In anime and games, there are many characters who race through their stories alongside their beloved cars. Some risk their lives challenging dangerous races, others cherish cars they’ve had for years, sometimes even giving them names, while some heavily customize their vehicles to their liking. There are even instances where the car itself transforms and fights! The ways characters interact with their cars are truly diverse.
With that in mind, Anime! Anime! conducted a reader survey titled “Who are the most memorable characters with beloved cars?” We received 176 responses during the survey period from May 16th to May 20th.
The gender ratio was roughly equal, with approximately 45 percent male and 55 percent female respondents. The age groups were primarily younger demographics, with around 40 percent under 19 and about 20 percent in their 20s.

Characters Racing Through Stories With Their Beloved Cars!
1st Place
Taking first place is Amuro Tooru (Furuya Rei) from 『Meitantei Konan』. He received approximately 20 percent of the votes.
Meitantei Konan Zero no Shikkonin (C) 2018 Aoyama Gosho / Meitantei Konan Production Committee
Amuro Tooru’s beloved car is a white RX-7. Thrilling car chases involving this vehicle are depicted in the movies. Readers commented, “Even after it was heavily damaged during a chase after criminals, he didn’t buy a new car but kept repairing the old one, which shows Amuro-san’s strong affection for it.”
In particular, in the past episode “CASE. Hagiwara Kenji” from 『Keisatsu Gakkou Hen Wild Police Story』, there is an episode related to the RX-7. Fans shared their thoughts on his hidden feelings, saying, “Even though he said, ‘Such a flashy car isn’t my taste,’ you could tell he was really interested in it,” and “Amuro-san cherishes the car because it holds memories of his deceased friend.”
2nd Place
In second place is Fujiwara Takumi from 『Kashiramoji D』. He received approximately 9 percent of the votes.

Fujiwara Takumi’s beloved car is the Toyota AE86 Sprinter Trueno, known as the “Hachiroku”. It’s distinctive for its white and black color scheme and the words “Fujiwara Toufu-ten (Private Use)” on the body. Comments highlighted not just the racing scenes but also the character’s changing feelings towards the car: “Originally, it was just a car he used to help with his father’s work, and Takumi himself wasn’t particularly interested in it, but the process of naturally developing attachment to it as he raced was impressive,” and “As he grew as a street racer, his trust in the car deepened. It truly became a companion.”
3rd Place
Coming in third is Lupin Sansei from 『Lupin Sansei』. He received approximately 8 percent of the votes.
Lupin has driven many cars throughout the series, but the Fiat 500 that appeared in works like 『Lupin Sansei Cagliostro no Shiro』 is particularly familiar to fans. “I was thrilled by the intensity of the car chase in the yellow Fiat 500 climbing a cliff,” commented one reader, praising the sense of speed. In the memorable first episode, he even drives an F1 car. It’s fair to say that cars are an essential element throughout the entire series.
Other Comments!
『Hirogaru Sky! Precure』 Key Visual (C) ABC-A・Toei Animation
For Seiai Ageha from 『Hirogaru Sky! Precure』, comments included: “As the first adult Precure in the series, she has a driver’s license. She cherishes ‘Piyo-chan’, the beloved car she fell in love with at first sight, and the scenes where she drives the other members are wonderfully mature.”
Regarding Nohara Hiroshi from 『Crayon Shinchan』: “He shows so much affection that he even named his car Angelina, and he continued to drive it even after the body got scratched, citing it as a reminder of family memories. In the 2016 『Nohara-ke Shinsha o Kau』 series, they finally purchased a new car!”
『Nazotoki wa Dinner no Ato de』 Key Visual (C) Higashigawa Tokuya / Shogakukan / “Nazotoki wa Dinner no Ato de” Production Committee
For Kazamatsuri Kyouichiro from 『Nazotoki wa Dinner no Ato de』: “As the son of a car manufacturer’s chairman, he’s a detective who drives a silver metallic Jaguar in the original novel. In the anime, he plots to quickly solve cases so he can go for a drive with his subordinate, Houjou Reiko.”
And for Mr. Most from 『Saikyou Ou Zukan ~The Ultimate Battles~』: “He’s the commentator and analyst for the tournament, but his beloved car is often destroyed by the competing animals. In the second season, his newly acquired car meets a tragic end again… What will happen to Most’s beloved car in the future!?” Votes were also cast for characters from currently airing titles.
In this survey, comments focusing on the relationship with the beloved car, rather than just driving skill, were particularly noticeable. The bond between characters and their cars, going beyond just being a mode of transportation, seems to capture the hearts of fans.
