About Koukaku Kidoutai STAND ALONE COMPLEX
『Koukaku Kidoutai』 is an SF manga series that began serialization in Koudansha’s “Young Magazine Kaizokuban” in 1989 by manga artist Shirou Masamune. It depicts the struggles of Public Security Section 9, also known as “Koukaku Kidoutai,” an offensive unit led by Kusanagi Motoko, a full-body cyborg with exceptional abilities in cyber warfare, combat, and more, as they tackle increasingly sophisticated and complex heinous crimes.
『Koukaku Kidoutai STAND ALONE COMPLEX』 is a TV anime adaptation of the original manga, produced by Production I.G with Kamiyama Kenji serving as director and series composition writer. It aired from October 2002 to November 2003, spanning 26 episodes. Since then, the series has continued to expand, leading up to 『Koukaku Kidoutai SAC_2045』, which is exclusively distributed worldwide on Netflix.
Looking ahead, a new TV anime series, 『Koukaku Kidoutai THE GHOST IN THE SHELL』, produced by Science SARU, is scheduled to air in 2026.
