*WIND BREAKER* is a manga by Nii Satoru that began serialization on “Magajin Poketto” in 2021. The story follows the protagonist, Sakura Haruka, who has lived a lonely life with only fighting as his strength. He arrives in town aiming to reach the top of Fuurin Koukou, a high school once feared as a delinquent haven. However, he finds that the students there are now called Boufuurin = WIND BREAKER and have transformed into protectors of the town.
Sakura, though bewildered, becomes a member of Boufuurin and joins forces with the first friends he’s ever made, throwing himself into battles for the fate of the town. With its unprecedented setting of righteous delinquents protecting the town, its cast of individualistic and charming characters, and a classic delinquent manga storyline, the series quickly gained many fans.
It gathered significant attention, particularly among the younger generation, and won the “Nationwide Bookstore Employees’ Recommended Comics 2022” award the year after its serialization began. In 2024, a highly anticipated TV anime adaptation premiered, dominating viewership rankings on various streaming services. The second season of the TV anime aired shortly after, in the April 2025 season.
In just four years since its launch, the series has achieved a cumulative circulation of over 8 million copies, showcasing its immense popularity. This live-action film adaptation was first announced via a special teaser video revealed during the finale of the recently aired TV anime second season.
Staffing for the Live-Action “WIND BREAKER”
Directing the film is Hagiwara Kentarou, who has brought forth new coming-of-age films like *Blue Period* and *Sayonara Made no 30-pun*. The script is penned by Masaike Yousuke, recipient of the “Nihon Akademii Shou” for Best Screenplay for *Anime Supremacy!*. Combining the appeal of an action film with the human drama of how the lonely protagonist, Sakura Haruka, changes through his interactions with friends, this powerful duo, known for creating moving human stories, will breathe life into the characters in the movie *WIND BREAKER / Uindo Bureikaa*.

Filming took place entirely on location in Okinawa-ken from February to April 2025. Toufu Shoutengai, the core setting where the Boufuurin protect the town, was filmed using a real shopping street with extensive cooperation from the prefecture, local municipalities, and residents. A large-scale open set was constructed, including creating movie-specific shop signs, decorating exteriors and interiors for each store, and building from scratch iconic elements from the original work like the Toufu Shoutengai arch and the signboard featuring the Boufuurin’s creed. The world of the movie was brilliantly crafted while inheriting the essence of the original story.
Producer Kamo Yoshitaka commented on the intention behind the live-action adaptation, saying, “The passionate friendship among the companions breaks through the loneliness and conflict that protagonist Sakura carries. ‘Even deep darkness that cannot be overcome alone can be shattered with companions.’ That desire to deliver the powerful message of the original work through the movie was the starting point.”
Director Hagiwara Kentarou spoke about the experience of filming, stating, “This film is a challenge to the seemingly outdated genre of ‘yankee movies.’ I tackled the filming believing that the answer lies in questioning, breaking, and reconstructing the ‘obvious’ with young actors full of passion.”
The first look unveiled alongside the announcement captures a back view of the six Boufuurin members facing the large horde of Shishitou Ren flooding the streets of Toufu Shoutengai. With the wind rising and leaves swirling, the image conveys the very beginning of the battle about to commence, giving a sense of scale. The special teaser video is an exciting production, featuring dynamic and fast-paced action scenes and ending with an impressive back shot of Sakura rushing towards the enemy, building anticipation.
Following this announcement, voices online included “It’s finally getting a live-action adaptation! I’m so looking forward to this!” and immediate predictions for the cast.
The live-action movie *WIND BREAKER / Uindo Bureikaa* is scheduled for release in December 2025, distributed by Warner Bros. Japan. We look forward to further updates.

This film is a challenge to the seemingly outdated genre of “yankee movies.” It can also be rephrased as breaking free from fixed notions. Can we deliver a message that allows young people to look forward through violence, even if it’s something that cannot be condoned for any reason? With young actors full of passion, I tackled the filming believing that the answer lies in questioning, breaking, and reconstructing the “obvious.” Please look forward to the release!
Scriptwriter: Masaike Yousuke
I set my heart on “packing every single bit of character charm” into the script for the movie *WIND BREAKER*. Imagining the sight of protagonist Sakura and his companions clashing, shouting, and fighting through, we repeatedly discussed the script to weave a story with overwhelming passion that can be called a “highlight in every scene.” And through exchanges with Nii-sensei, the original author, an original development unique to the movie has also been born!!! In collaboration with my beloved director Hagiwara Kentarou, we have created a completely new type of delinquent film that aims for the “top,” appealing not only to fans of the original but also to those experiencing it for the first time! Please wait a little longer for the release!

Witnessing the passionate friendship among companions break through the loneliness and conflict held by protagonist Sakura deeply moved me, which led to the planning of this live-action film adaptation. Just like Sakura, I believe everyone has felt loneliness at some point. The idea was born from the desire to deliver the powerful message of the original work through the movie: “Even deep darkness that cannot be overcome alone can be shattered with companions.” From the initial planning stages, along with Nii Satoru-sensei, the original author, Director Hagiwara Kentarou, Scriptwriter Masaike Yousuke, and other incredibly talented creators, we have put our hearts into making the movie *WIND BREAKER* enjoyable for the audience. It has turned out to be this winter’s number one entertainment film, combining powerful action unique to live-action with a heartwarming story of passionate friendship. Please do look forward to it!
