Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai Anime Special Is On The Way!
Get ready, fans of romantic mind games! A brand new television anime special has just been announced for the incredibly popular series, Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai. This exciting news comes straight from the official website for the anime adaptation of Aka Akasaka’s manga. A Look Back at the Series’ Roots
If you’re not familiar, Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai: Tensai-tachi no Renai Zunousen (also known as Kaguya-sama: Love Is War) is based on the hilarious romantic comedy manga by the talented Aka Akasaka. The manga originally kicked off its run in Miracle Jump back in May 2015 before moving to Young Jump the following March. It wrapped up its story with the 28th volume published in December 2022. The series has been a massive hit, boasting a cumulative 22 million copies of its collected volumes in circulation. Its popularity even earned it the prestigious 65th Shogakukan Manga Award in the general category back in 2020.
The Anime’s Journey So Far
The anime adaptation has been a wild ride for fans, starting with the first season airing in Winter 2019. That initial run covered roughly the first five volumes of the manga. Aniplex of America licensed this season and made it available for simulcast on Crunchyroll, Funimation, and Hulu. The second season arrived in Spring 2020, picking up the story and adapting material up to volume ten. Funimation exclusively handled the simulcast for the second season and later began streaming an English dub. Season three followed in Spring 2022, basing its story on up to volume thirteen of the manga. For the third season, Crunchyroll handled the simulcast with subtitles and dubs in multiple languages. Most recently, a sequel movie premiered in December 2022, continuing the animated story.

For those who prefer to read the source material, VIZ Media licensed the manga for English release under their Shonen Jump imprint. They began publishing the series in February 2018, and the 28th and final volume was released in April 2024, allowing English readers to complete the full story.
