Rupan Sansei Kariosutoro no Shiro

Synopsis
One day, Rupan (voiced by Yamada Yasuo) and Jigen (voiced by Kobayashi Kiyoshi) successfully pull off a major heist from a casino in Monaco. However, Rupan realizes the money is actually the legendary counterfeit currency known as the “Goat Bills,” produced in the Duchy of Cagliostro. Rupan has a past history with the Duchy, having attempted to infiltrate it to steal the Goat Bills before and failed.
Determined to uncover the secret this time, Rupan heads to the Duchy of Cagliostro…

Along the way, he encounters a beautiful girl in a wedding dress being chased by mysterious men! The girl, Kurarisu (voiced by Shimamoto Sumi), is the daughter of the Grand Ducal family of Cagliostro. After her father’s death, she was being forced into marriage by Kariosutoro Hakushaku (voiced by Ishida Tarou), who now rules the country, and was trying to escape.
Although rescued by Rupan, Kurarisu realizes she has nowhere left to run. She entrusts the ring passed down through the Grand Ducal family to Rupan and returns to the Hakushaku’s side…

The Hakushaku is rushing his marriage to Kurarisu to get his hands on the ring, which holds the key to the location of a hidden treasure within the castle. Realizing the Hakushaku’s ambition, Rupan uses Zenigata Keibu (voiced by Naya Gorou), who has also arrived in the Duchy of Cagliostro, as a distraction to infiltrate the castle. With the help of Mine Fujiko (voiced by Masuyama Eiko), who was also approaching the Hakushaku aiming for the castle’s treasure, Rupan attempts to save Kurarisu…
Trivia
(1) It’s actually Miyazaki Hayao’s first feature film directorial work
Miyazaki Hayao is a globally renowned animation director from Studio Ghibli. This film is actually his very first feature film directorial work. With its exhilarating car chase, a suspenseful treasure hunt, a gentle romance with the heroine Kurarisu, and thrilling action scenes with Rupan and his companions, it’s a masterpiece that encapsulates all of Rupan Sansei’s charm.
(2) The influence of the original work on Miyazaki Hayao, and more…
According to Miyazaki Hayao, the inspiration for the story came from “The Countess of Cagliostro,” a volume from Maurice Leblanc’s “Arsène Lupin” series. He apparently read and reread it countless times during his middle school years. The “Phantom Thief Arsène Lupin” series by Leblanc includes a work titled “The Countess of Cagliostro.”
In fact, the heroine Kurarisu’s name is also derived from a female character in this story. In the novel, she is depicted as a peerless beauty who becomes a lover of a young Rupan.
Additionally, the novel “The Haunted Tower” by Edogawa Ranpo also influenced Miyazaki Hayao. The version Miyazaki-Kantoku read was Ranpo’s adaptation, which was itself a rewrite by Kuroiwa Ruiko of a novel called “The Grey Woman” by an American author, setting the story in Japan. The setting for Ranpo’s “The Haunted Tower” is an old mansion with a clock tower. Miyazaki Hayao had apparently always wanted to create a story centered around such a clock tower.
So, influenced by his favorite books, “Phantom Thief Arsène Lupin” and “The Haunted Tower,” Kariosutoro no Shiro was born!
