“Kusuriya no Hitorigoto” is a historical mystery series set in the East, based on the novels by Hyuuga Natsu published under “Hero Bunko,” which have also been adapted into manga serialized in “Big Gangan” and “Sunday GX.” The series boasts a cumulative total of over 38 million copies sold. It follows Maomao, a girl who works as a poison tester in the imperial court, as she solves various challenging cases that arise within the palace.
The first season of the TV anime aired starting in October 2023, followed by the second season which began in January 2025. The series has consistently ranked high on various streaming platforms, drawing significant attention. Furthermore, the first-ever “TV Anime ‘Kusuriya no Hitorigoto’ Exhibition” kicked off on March 26th this year, and a collaboration with Universal Studios Japan is scheduled for this summer. The series is certainly poised for continued excitement.
In the previously aired Episode 46, Maomao and Jinshi finally reunited. Adding to the drama, Maomao learned Jinshi’s true identity as the Emperor’s brother. On social media, fans were buzzing with comments like “Jinshi-sama looks so cool in armor!!” and “It’s great that even after their reunion, their interactions are just like usual,” and “It’s so like them that it wasn’t a tearful reunion lol.”
Now, in Episode 47, Jinshi successfully protects Maomao. He also finally manages to defeat Ko Shishou, the head of the Ko clan, who had committed treason.
Later, while searching for Shenmei and Rouren, Jinshi finds himself threatened by Rouren, who points a gun at him and forces him to accompany her. She leads him to where Shenmei and Suirei are located, and there, in front of them, Rouren begins to reveal the hidden secrets of the Ko clan.
Thirty years ago, Shenmei believed she was chosen by the former Emperor to be married as a high-ranking consort. However, the hidden truth was that she was summoned as a “hostage to prevent the Ko clan from revolting.”
Confronted with numerous facts she had never known, Shenmei becomes enraged and points her gun at Rouren. The moment she pulls the trigger, the gun backfires! Rouren had cleverly packed the muzzle beforehand.
Then, Rouren makes a request to Jinshi, saying, “Could you grant me two wishes?” Her first wish was to rescue those who had been exiled by Shenmei. Her second wish was to use the sharp claw-like decoration that Shenmei possessed to inflict a wound on Jinshi’s face.
However, seeing his master injured, Bashien fires at Rouren. Bleeding, Rouren dances as the castle falls, a smile gracing her face.
For Rouren, who carried out her role as a villain until the very end, social media was filled with comments such as “She could have chosen to escape, but her kindness makes me cry,” and “I have things to say about the ending, but for now, I just want to say thank you for your hard work,” and “In her final moments, I forgot to breathe.”
Episode 47, “Ko no Ichizoku,” is currently available for free streaming on ABEMA.
