Audio content, which allows listeners to enjoy worldviews and characters through sound rather than visuals, has seen significant growth in recent years.
While radio dramas and drama CDs have long been popular, the spread of streaming platforms has increased opportunities to experience voice dramas, recitation plays, and more. Music projects related to these works are also thriving, with character songs sometimes released even before stage adaptations or game versions. Many Anime! Anime! readers likely have works or projects they’d love to see animated.
Therefore, we conducted a reader survey titled “What audio content do you want to see animated?”
The gender breakdown was approximately 20 percent male and 80 percent female, with women making up the vast majority. Age demographics were roughly 19 percent under 19, 25 percent in their 20s, and 30 percent in their 30s.
■Hit Works Where Music and Story Intersect Appear!
This survey saw many votes cast for media mix projects that unfold across various mediums, centering around music.
『VS AMBIVALENZ』 tells the story of candidates striving to become members of a new idol group. It has garnered attention as a two-choice audition project where voice actors play dual roles, and users’ votes determine which one of the idol pair gets to debut.
Besides music, music videos, and live performances, documentary dramas are also distributed. Comments expressing a desire for animation included, “I want to see the characters actually moving!” and “I want to know the idols’ gestures and habits that aren’t clear just from their voices, and I’m also curious about the characters interacting with each other,” showing hope for deepening their relationships through animation.
『MILGRAM-ミルグラム-』 (MILGRAM-Mirugramu-) is another viewer-participation music project where votes hold the key. Created by game designer Yamanaka Takuya and music producer DECO*27, content is continuously being produced, including CDs, novelizations, and comic adaptations.
“The thrill of the story’s fate changing based on viewer votes to ‘forgive’ or ‘not forgive’ characters imprisoned as convicts is its charm. The original voice drama also offers a sense of realism, as if the prisoners are truly being interrogated,” commented one reader, praising the unique premise and the realistic exchanges between prisoners and wardens.
『DIG-ROCK』 is a drama CD series set at the entertainment agency DIGNITY PRODUCTION. Numerous songs have been released to date. The game “DIG-ROCK -Documentary of Youthful Sounds-” is scheduled for release on August 28th, and “2nd LIVE -IGNITE-” is set for November 2nd.
Readers expressed high expectations, saying, “The story and characters are interesting, and above all, the music is amazing! After the game adaptation, I hope it gets an anime so more people can discover how great the work is.”
「超人的シェアハウスストーリー『カリスマ』」 (Choujinteki Sharehouse Story “Charisma”) is a two-dimensional character project where seven charismatics live together. It has undertaken cross-media initiatives including music, drama distribution, and stage performances.
“It would be great if the lively and chaotic atmosphere of the seven people could be அப்படியே (appake, like that, as is) animated! I want to see their flashy costumes move when they achieve ‘Charisma Charge 100%’ and undergo a ‘Charisma Break’,” and “I’m a little scared but also curious to see what that chaotic world will be like in anime form,” were comments highlighting how the surreal and unique style has captured fans’ hearts.
Furthermore, votes were also cast for mothy’s VOCALOID song 「悪ノ娘」 (Aku no Musume). Released in 2008, this song tells the tragic story of a princess ruling the Kingdom of Lucifenia. Comments included, “The world depicted in the lyrics is beautiful, and it’s been adapted into novels, comics, and even a collaboration in the game ‘Project Sekai Colorful Stage! feat. Hatsune Miku’. There’s a precedent for animating Vocaloid songs with ‘Kagerou Project’, so I hope more follow in the future.”
