From Pages to Screen: The Manga’s Success
The anime series draws its vibrant energy and side-splitting humor from the popular seinen comedy manga, also titled Grand Blue. Written by Inoue Kenji and illustrated by Yoshioka Kimitake, the manga first graced the pages of good! Afternoon magazine back in April 2014. It has since become a major hit, with Kodansha publishing the 24th volume on April 7, and the 25th volume eagerly anticipated for an October 7 release. The series boasts an impressive cumulative total of 10 million copies of its volumes in print, a testament to its widespread appeal!
For English-speaking fans, Kodansha USA acquired the license for the manga in November 2017, steadily releasing volumes, with the 22nd volume hitting shelves on June 24.
Big Screen Splash: The Live-Action Film
The popularity of Grand Blue isn’t just limited to anime and manga. Its comedic brilliance was also brought to life on the big screen! A live-action film, produced by Warner Bros. Japan, made its debut in Japanese cinemas in August 2020. The movie was a box office success, grossing over 452 million yen, which translates to approximately US$3.1 million.
