Interview with Masuko Naozumi-san

Masuko Naozumi-san

――This opportunity came from a small, independent toy shop like ours. Do you often take on such requests?

Masuko: No, it’s not a regular occurrence, but because it’s a shop in Fukushima, I have a special place in my heart for the region.

――That’s right, Dohatsuten-san has visited Fukushima many times on tour. Fukushima is a big prefecture, but there aren’t many other bands that come all the way to Iwaki, Koriyama, and Aizu like you do.

Masuko: That’s true. Originally, I went for the Kaze to Rock event even before the earthquake, but after that, I’ve played so many live shows there that I truly think of it as my second hometown. And of course, there’s M1-Gou (a vintage toy shop in Koriyama), right? chuckles

――Masuko-san, you’re famous as a Hedorah collector, but how many do you actually have?

Masuko: Hmm, I’d say around 500. If it has ‘Hedorah‘ in the name, I buy it without even looking at new releases, you know? chuckles Also, there’s one more Hedorah I don’t have, but I have all the others, so if I get that one, my collection will… end, won’t it?

――laughs So, a collection can actually be ‘finished’!

Masuko: Yes, there’s that, and recently, there have been fakes made, so I’ve become cautious about buying. And my collection would be complete, right? chuckles

――We brought a product sample today; what do you think after seeing it in person?

Masuko: Oh, it’s wonderful! It’s even better than I imagined. It really captures the essence of Akabeko, and this size is just perfect. I’ve always wanted to do something with Akabeko, especially with my connection to Fukushima.

――I think the Akabeko design suits the rounded face of the original Godzilla perfectly. It’s truly a fantastic Fukushima souvenir.

Masuko: Indeed. Lately, there are some really expensive sofubi figures out there, costing hundreds of thousands of yen, but ultimately, they’re still toys. I really don’t want them to become ‘art’ pieces.

――What do you find most appealing about sofubi figures, Masuko-san?

Masuko: Well, it’s the nostalgic atmosphere they evoke, and their less-than-perfect, intricate expressions. There’s a certain warmth you feel from them. I do check out sofubi from overseas, but they’re often too elaborate. While that might be their appeal, I prefer the charm of Japanese sofubi.

――Currently, Dohatsuten is between tours, and tonight’s Yokohama concert is completely sold out! Do you have any tips for a band to continue for so long?

Masuko: Ah, enjoying it is truly the most important thing. Even now, live performances are so much fun.

――So, even after continuing for so long, you never feel like you’ve completely ‘finished’ or achieved everything?

Masuko: That’s right, because nothing is ever perfect. It also depends on the performance of the band members each day and the energy of the audience.

――That’s certainly true. Along with that, do you have any tips for continuing as a collector?

Masuko: Don’t boys just love collecting things? My origin as a collector, you see, was in elementary school when baseball team badges were popular. I’d put tons of them on my cap and wear it to school. My collection was so impressive that my teacher even told me I was the only one forbidden from wearing a cap to school! chuckles I guess that feeling from back then, that’s always at the core of it.

――Finally, please give a message to everyone who picks up this sofubi figure.

Masuko: As I mentioned earlier, Akabeko is a folk toy, right? So, I’d love for parents, grandparents, everyone, to have one in their home as a special Fukushima product. And please, take it out of the bag, display it, move it around, and play with it!
