TV anime Nihon Sangoku episode 8, “Ryūko Kessen” (Dragon Tiger Decisive Battle), aired on May 25, 2026. In this installment, the cornered Ryuumon Mitsuhide executes a breathtakingly risk-laden strategy that has left viewers calling it “too cool” and “almost too intense.”

Nihon Sangoku is based on the manga by Matsuki Ikka, serialized in Shogakukan’s MangaONE app and Ura Sunday webcomic site. The story is set in a near-future Japan where civilization has collapsed after nuclear war, natural disasters, and corrupt governance. The country has split into three warring states. The protagonist, Mikado Aoki, a low-ranking local official, aims to reunite Japan using his vast knowledge and persuasive skills.
The manga has surpassed 1 million copies in print. The anime adaptation is directed by Terasawa Kazuaki, produced by Studio Kafka. The cast includes Ono Kensho (Mikado Aoki), Fukuyama Jun (Asama Yoshitsune), Seto Asami (Higashimachi Koki), and Pan Megumi (narration).
※ The following contains spoilers for episode 8. Proceed with caution.
The Episode Opens With an Ominous Omen
Episode 8 begins with Sakura shooting a white snake in the forest. Because white snakes are considered auspicious “messengers of the gods,“ viewers immediately took to social media: “Shooting a good omen before battle feels unlucky…” “A certain Sengoku warlord who killed a white snake later met a terrible fate…”
Sakura, who had seized the entire Okuetsu region of Fukui via a surprise attack, addresses his troops before the decisive battle. He thanks them tearfully and declares his resolve to fight, but the audience remains skeptical: “The Seii troops are so gullible…” “The Seii army has become Sakura’s fan club.” “He’s starting to get on my nerves…”

Ryuumon Cornered, Chooses Siege
Sakura’s forces advance swiftly, cutting off Nagamine’s Yamato army from joining Ryuumon. Facing a vast enemy with few men, Ryuumon opts for a “siege“ (kōjō) strategy to wait for reinforcements. His officers oppose it, fearing that even if they defeat Seii, Ryuumon himself would be in danger. Amid the dissent, Ryuumon’s strategist Kaku Yasuaki remains silent.

Ryuumon asks Kaku for his thoughts. Their discussion reveals that Aoki’s agricultural reform proposal is working, that the exiled Shuyama Kirokurei (seen in episode 5) may have been given a role, and that the fate of the war depends on Aoki, who is holding down the fort back home. Online reactions: “Aoki’s efforts are paying off quietly!” “That exiled old man is the key?!” “Aoki is being valued a lot, huh…”

Ryuumon’s Daring Gambit: The Empty Fort Strategy
After hearing Kaku’s opinion, Ryuumon decides to buy time with a particular tactic – one that only works against an intelligent enemy and could mean death. Kaku tries to dissuade him, but Ryuumon responds: “What should truly be feared is not death, but failing to fulfill the life you were given.”

Viewers praised Ryuumon’s determination: “Uncle Ryuumon is way too cool!” “His resolve is set.” However, Kaku’s condition drew concern. He was seen coughing repeatedly and looking unkempt, with no time to shave. Comments included: “He looks sick…” “That cough doesn’t sound good…” “Please don’t cough, Kaku!”
When Sakura learns that Ryuumon has come out alone, he leads his army to the Kuzuryū River. There, on a bridge, sits Ryuumon dressed in white robes, calmly preparing tea.

Sakura’s strategist Heiya Miyakichi warns, “Wait, don’t rush – this is Ryuumon’s trap.” Sharp-eyed fans noticed the line is nearly identical to words spoken by Sima Yi in Yokoyama Mitsuteru’s manga Sangokushi, prompting teasing: “Kōmei’s trap, no wait, Ryuumon’s trap lol” “It’s Sangokushi, but the Yokoyama version!”
This is the classic “Empty Fort Strategy“ (kūjō no kei), where a commander deliberately leaves his position vulnerable to provoke hesitation in the enemy. Knowing it’s a suicidal ploy, Sakura chooses not to retreat but to advance. Following Heiya’s advice, he shoots an arrow at Ryuumon. The arrow hits near the shoulder, and a falling lantern ignites Ryuumon’s kimono. But Ryuumon does not flinch, fixing a sharp gaze on Sakura. Viewers were appalled: “…!!?” “Incredible intensity!” “His willpower is insane!” “Too scary!”

Overwhelmed by Ryuumon’s ferocious aura, Sakura assumes there are hidden troops and quickly retreats. As Heiya’s disappointed expression shows, this retreat will later erode the absolute authority Sakura had built.
Aoki’s Move
Meanwhile, Aoki, left in charge, instructs Yoshitsune to head to Fukui as a messenger while he himself sets out to have an audience with the emperor. Yoshitsune is bewildered (“Huh?”), and viewers wondered: “Can he really get an audience?” “Can he talk the emperor over…?” The episode ends there.
The episode illustration for “Ryūko Kessen” was drawn by Hida Keiji, known for his work on the games Sangokushi 14 and Sangokushi 8 RERMAKE. Original author Matsuki Ikka, a devoted fan of the Three Kingdoms, posted: “There could be no greater joy.”
Episode 9 is scheduled to air on June 1, 2026 (with a world-exclusive streaming on Prime Video every Sunday at 21:00, and a broadcast on Monday).
