September 4th is Kushii no Hi, or Comb Day.

This commemorative day, named after the phonetic Japanese wordplay of “ku” (9) and “shi” (4), was established to promote interest in beauty and grooming.

In the world of anime and games, it’s common to encounter male characters sporting long hair. The reasons behind their flowing locks are as varied as the characters themselves: sometimes it’s a statement of fashion, other times a symbol of authority for royalty or nobility, or even an expression of freedom or rebellion. Far from being just a visual trait, long hair often serves as a crucial element that highlights a character’s individuality and the rich background of their story.

Following last year’s success, Anime! Anime! conducted a reader poll asking, “Who is your favorite long-haired male character?” We received 990 responses during the survey period from August 17th to August 24th.

The demographic breakdown showed a significant majority of female respondents, with approximately 20 percent male and 80 percent female. The age groups were predominantly younger, with about 60 percent being 19 years old or younger, and around 15 percent in their 20s.

Long-Haired Characters Leap into Action!

First Place

First place goes to Katsura Kotarou from Gintama. With approximately 15 percent of the votes, he has secured the top spot for an incredible five consecutive years.

Many fans were captivated by Katsura Kotarou’s signature long black hair. Comments poured in, praising his “beautiful hair that would make any girl jealous. I truly admire those straight black locks!” Others noted, “His clean, long hair is simply stunning. The iconic exchange where Gin-san calls him ‘Zura’ and he reverts, ‘It’s not Zura, it’s Katsura!’ also makes his hair incredibly memorable.”

However, some fans also felt that “the short haircut he sported in the Benizakura Hen was also quite dashing,” showing his versatility. Furthermore, the upcoming broadcast of the spin-off, 3-nen Z-gumi Ginpachi-sensei, starting in October, has generated excitement. Fans are eagerly anticipating comments like, “We finally get to see the class president with a school uniform and long hair!”

Second Place

Taking second place is Tokitou Muichirou from Kimetsu no Yaiba! With approximately 6 percent of the votes, he has made a significant leap from 13th place last year!

Tokitou Muichirou is one of the Hashira, the highest-ranking swordsmen of the Demon Slayer Corps, wielding the Breath of Mist as the Kasumi Bashira. Fans adored his unique hair, with comments like, “The gradient from the jet black roots to the emerald green tips perfectly highlights Tokitou Muichirou’s ephemeral beauty! The way his hair flutters with every technique he uses is just mesmerizing.” His visual appeal isn’t the only factor; his comical interactions also charmed voters, with one recalling, “I chuckled a bit when Kotetsu-kun called him ‘Kombu Head’ in the Katanakaji no Sato Hen.”

Interestingly, Tomioka Giyuu, the Mizu Bashira, also ranked, landing in a tie for 15th place. One fan commented, “In the newly drawn illustration for Gekijouban “Kimetsu no Yaiba” Mugenjou Hen Dai Isshou Akaza Sairai, Tomioka-san was seen with his hair tied up. It really made me realize how long his hair actually is!” The ongoing success of the latest movie adaptation certainly gave him a boost.

Third Place

In third place is Chigiri Hyouma from Blue Lock! With approximately 5 percent of the votes, he climbed from 5th place last year to secure a spot in the top 3.

Chigiri Hyouma, a striker who uses his exceptional speed as his weapon, garnered comments such as, “The combination of his red hair color and long, straight style is striking! My eyes are drawn to his red hair as it flows during his sprints.” Another fan highlighted, “Despite his refined ‘Ojou’ (princess) like appearance, he’s quite selfish on the pitch. That gap in his playstyle is captivating.” His meticulous attention to his hair also stood out, with comments noting, “He braids his hair before matches and even said he’d bring a comb to a deserted island, showing his incredible dedication to his hair.” It’s clear that this character, for whom hair styling is essential, has truly charmed the voters.

Introducing Other Comments!

For Aizawa Shouta from Boku no Hero Academia, fans remarked, “The sway of his shoulder-length black hair truly elevates the battle scenes. It’s so cool when his Quirk activates and his hair stands on end, and it’s also wonderful to see him in various hairstyles like a half-updo or a ponytail!”

Regarding Tachibana Senzou from Nintama Rantarou, one comment said, “He’s number one in the ‘Nintama’ silky-straight hair ranking! Ninjutsu Gakuen has many long-haired boys, but his beauty stands out even among them. Though sometimes he gets caught in explosions and his hair turns crispy…”

For Jinguji Jakurai from Hypnosis Mic -Division Rap Battle-, a fan shared, “His hair is so incredibly long, you can just imagine how much effort it must have taken to grow it to this extent. At 195cm tall, his hair reaches his knees! Apparently, the wig used for the stage play adaptation was over a meter long.”

And for Getou Suguru from Jujutsu Kaisen, a title that also saw a movie released this year, a voter commented, “His hair was long enough to tie into an odango hair bun even during his Jujutsu Koutou Senmon Gakkou days. After becoming a cult leader, his hair grew even longer, taking on a wilder vibe, and I absolutely love that transformation.”
