The “Megami’s Voice” interview series, featured in the popular ‘Megami Magazine’, invites up-and-coming voice actors to share their insights on their roles and works from beloved anime series. For the November 2025 issue, we’re thrilled to present an interview with Usui Yuri, the voice of Deena in the TV anime Yasei no Last Boss ga Arawareta! (which can be translated as “A Wild Last Boss Appeared!”). This exclusive article offers an extended version of the interview, including fascinating details that couldn’t be fit into the magazine!
Deena: Diligent Yet Endearingly Comical
――What was your initial impression of the series, Yasei no Last Boss ga Arawareta!?
I had actually checked out the original work even before my audition. I found the premise incredibly fresh and interesting: the protagonist, a man, is transmigrated into the body of Rufus-sama, who is female. While the series does feature some complex terminology, the special move scenes are undeniably cool and I think they’ll really resonate with fans of games and anime.
――How did you perceive Deena, the character you voice?
When I first saw her design, I thought she’d be a classic, orthodox heroine. However, reading through the audition script, I realized she has a very diligent side, a lovely cuteness, and even shines in comedic scenes. It made me think she must be a truly fascinating girl! She’s certainly energetic and expressive, but when faced with serious situations, she can be surprisingly calm and collected. There’s a cool analytical side to her that I find quite appealing – that gap is one of my favorite points about her.
――What was your approach to portraying Deena?
I focused on conveying the pride she takes in being Rufus-sama’s strategist, which subtly comes through in her lines. Initially, I even considered using a more mature vocal tone to emphasize her diligent nature. However, since she has so many comical moments, I decided not to restrict my voice range and played her with more freedom.
――Did your impression of Deena change after the voice recording sessions began?
She turned out to be far more comical than I had initially imagined! In fact, Aries, one of Rufus-sama’s Hadou Juuniseiten (Twelve Heavenly Stars of Hegemony), felt more like the traditional, cute heroine (laughs).
――Rufus-sama seems to gather many people around her, including the Hadou Juuniseiten.
At first, it was just Deena and Rufus-sama moving around together, but then more and more companions joined them. Many of these characters are quite serious, so for Deena, I aimed to be earnest when the situation called for it, but to go all out and fully express her emotions – crying, getting angry, and everything in between – during the comical scenes.
――Were there any particularly challenging aspects to your performance?
This is actually my first series where I passed an audition for a regular character, so I was incredibly nervous and felt a lot of pressure even before the recording started. However, Deena never shows a weak side; she’s always got that confident, “I told you so” look. She’s the type of character who would even try to take over someone else’s role just to explain something to Rufus-sama. So, I really had to suppress my own introverted tendencies, which was quite a struggle. Additionally, the staff directed me not to act “too subordinate” to Rufus, making it challenging to portray her as an equal to Rufus-sama.
――Were there any other memorable directions from the staff?
During a gag scene, they told me, “It’s okay if your voice sounds a bit messy, just go all out and try it!” At first, I was a bit hesitant, thinking, “Can I really go that far?” but it gradually became a lot of fun (laughs). I was so happy when the staff laughed at my over-the-top performance, especially when we recorded the anime’s commercial narration. Deena also has a very quick mind and can sometimes lead Rufus-sama by the nose, so to speak. The staff also mentioned, “We don’t want her to become a silly character.” So, after a gag scene, I made sure to emphasize the shift in tone when she transitions back into her role as strategist to provide explanations.
――Are there any aspects of Deena’s actions or thoughts that you can relate to?
In the story, other characters sometimes feel that Deena “lacks presence.” Honestly, I feel like I also have a rather subtle presence, so I can definitely relate to that (laughs).
――What do you admire most about Deena?
Deena acts as a mood-maker within Rufus-sama’s group, but she can also take the lead as a strategist. I don’t really have that kind of leadership myself, so I truly admire that about her.
――What do you particularly like about Rufus, the character Deena serves?
I love that while Rufus-sama is usually cool and composed, inside, she’s often making witty remarks or getting flustered, which creates a lot of funny moments. It’s not just her coolness; her hidden expressions that don’t come to the surface are also incredibly cute.
――Aside from Rufus and Deena, are there any other characters that caught your attention?
All the characters have strong personalities, but among them, Libra, one of the Hadou Juuniseiten, really stands out to me. Libra is a golem in a maid outfit, and Tojo Hisako-san, who voices her, delivers her lines with such precision, like a real golem, never stumbling over a single word. Even the Sound Director-san praised her, saying she was “perfect.” It might not be a way to describe a person, but I deeply respect her exquisite accuracy. Her overwhelmingly heavy love for Rufus-sama is another aspect I truly appreciate.
――Do you have any memorable experiences from the recording sessions?
Since this was my first regular role, I spent most of my time looking at the script, only occasionally chatting with Shuto Shina-san, who plays Aries and often sat next to me. Most of the other cast members were also focused on their scripts, but whenever Koshimizu Ami-san, the voice of Rufus, entered the studio, the whole atmosphere would instantly brighten. She spoke to me very kindly, and once when my stomach rumbled, she even offered me gummies! While her demeanor is different from Rufus-sama, she’s just as beloved by everyone.
――What new aspects of the show’s appeal do you find are highlighted by its anime adaptation?
With the addition of movement and sound, the battle scenes truly shine even more. Not only the acting, but also the visuals and sound design of the battle sequences are incredibly cool. The first episode kicks off with a battle, so I’m sure everyone will be drawn in right away. And then, immediately after the intense battles, there are comical scenes, so I hope everyone enjoys that engaging contrast as well.
――Finally, please share a message with the readers who are eagerly awaiting the broadcast.
Yasei no Last Boss ga Arawareta! is a series that constantly introduces new characters as the story progresses and reveals mysteries about past events, making you always wonder what will happen next. Please look forward to it! Deena’s ever-changing expressions are adorable, and as a strategist, she explains many crucial things. Even with some difficult terminology, she delivers her explanations with such confidence, so I hope you all seriously watch and enjoy her character!
Megami ni Question
Q. Your charming point?
A. Twin tails
I’ve had twin tails since elementary school, and I even wore them to school every day during my student years. It might give a youthful impression, but I think the cuteness that brings out a girlish charm is what makes twin tails so appealing.
Q. Your nickname?
A. Yuririn, Su-chan
“Yuririn” was given to me by my teacher in middle school. “Su-chan” was given to me by Oshika Nao-chan, from the same agency, after I started working. I’ve been given various nicknames, but “Su-chan” was a first, so I was surprised (laughs).
Q. Characteristics of your voice?
A. People around me say it’s “fluffy.”
I don’t really notice it myself, but since I started this job, people around me have been telling me my voice is “fluffy.” For me, it’s more like, “Oh, really?” (laughs).
Q. Your personality?
A. I go at my own pace.
When I go out with my mom, I often get scolded because I can’t stick to the time we’re supposed to leave (laughs). In my job too, I often find myself being the last one to leave the studio… But, since I’m a newcomer, I think it’s fine because I get to see my seniors off and check if anything has been left behind at the end…?
Q. What are you currently hooked on?
A. Tamagotchi
I started playing it intentionally without looking up what kind of character it would evolve into. It started as a rock-like creature, but now it looks like a rabbit. It’s very cute.
Q. Like Deena, what’s something you could wait a long time for?
A. Audition results?
Actually, I’m quite impatient; I can’t even wait for an elevator to arrive. However, even if I was told that audition results would take 10 years to come out, I could seriously wait for them. If an audition announced, “Results won’t be known for 10 years,” I think I’d still participate.
Q. Are there any games you’re good at?
A. Games I can play alone for a long time.
Recently, I’ve been trying Street Fighter 6. I’m not good at fighting games and often lose, but I’m able to persevere. Also, I’ve been playing Minecraft for about five or six years. However, I’m not good with monsters, so I usually play without them and focus on building houses.
Q. A catchphrase for this work?
A. The more you watch, the more you’ll want to know what happens next!
Seriously, if you just watch the first episode, you’ll definitely be curious about what’s going to happen! I’m really looking forward to everyone’s reactions.
