September 29th marks Western Confectionery Day, a holiday dedicated to honoring San Michel, the patron saint of pastry chefs.
In the vibrant worlds of anime and games, countless characters are intimately connected with sweet treats, or “sweets” as they’re often called. Their connections range from those who soothe others with their homemade delights, to characters who are constantly munching on snacks, or even those whose designs are inspired by fruits and chocolates. These diverse portrayals add a delightful splash of color and charm to their respective narratives.
To celebrate this sugary occasion, Anime!Anime! conducted a reader survey titled “Who is your favorite ‘Sweet-themed’ Character?” The poll ran from September 18th to September 22nd, gathering 343 responses. The demographics showed a clear leaning towards female respondents, with approximately 30 percent male and 70 percent female. The age groups were predominantly younger, with about 50 percent being 19 years old or younger and roughly 25 percent in their 20s.

Sweets Spark the Story! Protagonist & Heroine Take the Top Two Spots
1st Place
Claiming the top spot is Sakata Gintoki from Gintama, securing approximately 9 percent of the votes.
Sakata Gintoki, the protagonist who runs the Yorozuya Gin-chan odd-jobs business, is also famously known for his insatiable sweet tooth. Fans lauded his memorable moments, with comments such as “He’s an adult man who goes on a rampage after someone spills his parfait during his first appearance!” and “He’s devoured countless sweets like dango and parfaits. He’s such a sweets lover that he even asked a diner to add ‘Ujikin-don’ (anko on white rice) to their menu.” His impactful, often hilarious, sweet-related escapades are clearly a major reason for his popularity. For those craving more Gintoki, a spin-off series, 3-nen Z-gumi Ginpachi-sensei, began airing in October.
2nd Place
Coming in second is Waguri Kaoruko from Kaoru Hana wa Rin to Saku, with roughly 6 percent of the support.
Waguri Kaoruko is a high school student attending an all-girls academy. Readers were captivated by her, sharing comments like, “The first episode, where she happily devours many cakes at the Western confectionery shop run by protagonist Rintarou’s mother, was so memorable. It even kicks off the entire story!” and “I’ve never seen anyone eat cake so blissfully! Just watching her brings a sense of peace to my heart.” Her crucial role in the story’s connection to sweets and her delightful way of enjoying them clearly resonated with voters. This heroine from a Summer 2025 anime has certainly made a sweet impression, earning a high rank.
3rd Place
In third place is Trey Clover from Disney Twisted Wonderland, garnering approximately 5 percent of the votes.
Trey serves as the Vice Dorm Leader of the Heartslabyul Dorm at Night Raven College, a prestigious magical training school. Fans highlighted his inherent talent and love for baking, noting, “His family runs a cake shop, so he’s naturally skilled at making sweets. He even brings cakes to the Heartslabyul tea parties and farewell gatherings for his companions.” Another voter mentioned a particularly striking episode: “It was shocking to learn that in a dream, he endlessly bakes sweets until other dorm residents become plump!” His passion for confectionery clearly leads to some fascinating moments. Fans can now follow his magical adventures as the anime adaptation of Disney Twisted Wonderland began streaming on October 29th.
Introducing Other Comments!
Osanai Yuki from the Shoshimin Series was praised with, “She loves going on sweets tours. Even the titles of the incidents feature sweets, like ‘The Strawberry Tart Case in Spring’ and ‘The Tropical Parfait Case in Summer’.”

Kujou Tenn from IDOLiSH7 received comments like, “He’s the center of the idol group TRIGGER and possesses an angelic appearance, but in reality, he’s a perfectionist with a ruthless personality. Yet, during in-game birthday events, we get to see his sweet-loving side. His smile while happily munching on sweets is truly angelic!”
Kanroji Mitsuri from Kimetsu no Yaiba earned mentions such as, “It’s well-known that her hair turned pink from eating too much sakura mochi, but she even kept bees for honey… Her surname and given name are sweet themselves!”
Shouma / Kamen Rider Gav from Kamen Rider Gav also received votes, with comments like, “He’s a Kamen Rider whose motif is confectionery, with unique settings like boosting his physical abilities through the elasticity of gummies and wielding sharp swords made of potato chips. His journey of overcoming his past was also very moving.” Even a tokusatsu hero who concluded his series this year made it onto the list!

This survey revealed that not only characters who simply enjoy eating sweets, but also those skilled in making them, ranked highly. With both male and female characters making it into the rankings, it’s clear that sweets are widely cherished across all demographics.
