The first major retrospective exhibition for the beloved artist Inomata Mutsumi-sensei, whose overwhelming artistic skill and unique worldview captivated countless fans, is set to be held at Marui City Yokohama in Kanagawa Prefecture from December 5th to December 28th, 2025. Exciting new merchandise and ticket information have just been unveiled for this highly anticipated event!
Born on December 23rd, 1960, in Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture, Inomata Mutsumi was a celebrated character designer and illustrator. Her anime debut was with Plares Sanshirou, and her extensive list of representative works includes beloved anime such as Genmu Senki Leda, Windaria, and Shin Seiki GPX Cyber Formula. She also graced novels and films like Uchuu Ouji and Kaze no Tairiku with her captivating illustrations, and her iconic designs defined many games, including Tales of Destiny and other titles in the acclaimed Tales of series. Inomata Mutsumi-sensei left behind a wealth of stunning artwork before her sudden passing on March 10th, 2024. She was also widely known for her deep affection for cats, frequently incorporating them as a motif in her beautiful art.
The “Inomata Mutsumi Retrospective Exhibition” promises to be an extraordinary showcase, featuring over 120 vibrant analog original artworks from her anime, novel, game, and original creations. This exhibition will focus exclusively on her analog works, meticulously crafted with paints on Arches paper, carefully selected to present the true beauty of her hand-drawn art. Visitors will have a rare opportunity to experience up close the exquisite color reproduction, the rich texture (matière), and the living brushstrokes that were often difficult to fully appreciate in their printed forms.
Adding to the excitement, a complete chapter of valuable manga manuscripts drawn in the 1980s will be on display for the very first time. Furthermore, the exhibition will feature a myriad of previously unreleased works and never-before-seen archival materials. Discovered posthumously, these unveiled color illustrations and manga manuscripts are an absolute must-see for all fans.
At the venue, a range of exciting new merchandise will be available, including high-quality “88 Graph” prints. These prints are meticulously planned, produced, and sold by EDITION88. The lineup is a treasure trove for fans, featuring many of Inomata Mutsumi-sensei’s most popular illustrations, including several that are being commercialized for the very first time.
