Alongside this announcement, a magnificent visual of the character has been unveiled, practically letting you hear his iconic “Mosu!” battle cry!
The Enduring Appeal of Golden Kamui
The original manga by Noda Satoru, Golden Kamui, serialized in Shuukan Young Jump, has captivated audiences worldwide, boasting over 30 million copies in circulation as of August 2025. Set in the rugged wilderness of late Meiji-era Hokkaido, the story plunges into a high-stakes mystery surrounding a vast Ainu buried treasure. It’s a thrilling survival-battle action adventure, featuring a cast of uniquely charming and unforgettable characters, each with their own quirks and motivations, all brought to life amidst the unforgiving grandeur of nature.
A Live-Action Triumph
Despite many deeming the series “impossible to adapt” into live-action due to its distinctive world and complex characters, the first Golden Kamui movie, released in January 2024, shattered expectations. It proudly claimed the No.1 spot in weekend box office attendance during its opening week. Fans flocked to social media, showering it with praise, with comments like “Unbelievable faithful reproduction,” “You can feel the love and respect for the original,” “A movie that thoroughly satisfies manga fans,” and “The finest live-action adaptation of a manga ever!”
Continuing the Epic Saga
Building on this massive success, the intense gold rush for the Ainu treasure only escalated in the broadcast and streaming drama series, Renzoku Drama W Golden Kamui – Hokkaido Irezumi Shuujin Soutatsu-hen –. This series was lauded for its introduction of new, colorful characters and their dynamic battles. Now, Golden Kamui Abashiri Kangoku Shuugeki-hen emerges as the second film sequel, ready to pick up the narrative thread. The stage is set for an epic struggle within the confines of Abashiri Prison, where “Noppera-bou,” the enigmatic figure holding all the answers, is incarcerated. Who is friend and who is foe? The battle for truth and treasure is about to ignite!
The “Abashiri Kangoku Shuugeki-hen” promises to be the biggest battle in the series, brought to life on the grand screen. Character visuals for Usami Tokishige, Kadokura Toshinari, and Totan Anji have been steadily released, and now, we finally get to meet that character! It has been officially announced that Kunimura Jun will portray Koito Heiji, the father of Koito Otonoshin (played by Nakagawa Taishi) and a formidable Navy Rear Admiral, famously known as the “Prince of Satsuma.”
Kunimura Jun, a celebrated Japanese actor, has left an indelible mark with his powerful performances in countless domestic and international productions. His portrayal of Koito Rear Admiral is particularly exciting, as the character has delivered numerous memorable lines and scenes in the original manga. Known for his stern demeanor towards his son, yet harboring a deep, underlying love, fans are eager to see how Kunimura-san will bring this complex character to life.
Interestingly, original author Noda Satoru is a huge fan of Kunimura Jun and was eagerly awaiting his casting! During a visit to the set, an anecdote tells of Kunimura-san meticulously practicing the delivery of his “Mosu!” line. Make sure you head to the theater to witness his passionate rendition of this iconic phrase!
Upon the release of the character visual on official social media channels, fans immediately erupted with excitement. Comments poured in, praising the “still incredibly high level of reproduction,” marveling that “the quality of the makeup is so good, you can’t even recognize Kunimura-san,” and exclaiming that it would be “worth going to the cinema just to hear Kunimura-san’s ‘Mosu!'”
