Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoushitsu Returns to Theaters for 20th Anniversary!
Mark your calendars, SOS-dan members! As part of the “Suzumiya Haruhi no Orei” (Suzumiya Haruhi’s Gratitude) project celebrating the 20th anniversary of the TV anime series in 2026, the legendary film Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoushitsu (The Disappearance of Suzumiya Haruhi) is getting a special two-week revival screening starting February 6th, 2026. To make it even more special, the first week’s attendees will receive an exclusive “mini shikishi” (autograph board) featuring new illustration by the original character designer, Itou Noizi.

A Legendary Series That Changed Everything
The Suzumiya Haruhi series is a genre-blending school life story with a heavy dose of SF, based on the light novel by Tanigawa Nagaru with illustrations by Itou Noizi, published under the Kadokawa Sneaker Bunko label. Told from the perspective of Kyon, Haruhi’s self-proclaimed “biggest victim,” it follows the outrageous, world-changing antics of the supremely任性 (wagamama) girl Suzumiya Haruhi and her school club, the SOS-dan, where the supernatural becomes an everyday occurrence.
Its 2006 TV anime adaptation became a massive social phenomenon, famous for its non-chronological episode order and the incredibly catchy ending theme “Hare Hare Yukai,” whose dance routine took the internet by storm. A second season aired in 2009, adding new episodes like “Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody” and the infamous “Endless Eight” arc to the original 2006 run and presenting the story in chronological order.
The franchise reached a cinematic peak with the 2010 film Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoushitsu. It was a massive critical and commercial hit, a rare achievement for a film originating from a late-night anime. The series has also spawned numerous spin-offs like Suzumiya Haruhi-chan no Yuuutsu, Nyorōn Churuya-san, and Nagato Yuki-chan no Shoushitsu.

Celebrating “World Alteration Day” with Special Gifts
This revival screening is a heartfelt “thank you” to the fans who have supported the series for two decades. In a fitting tribute, the announcement of the first-week bonus was made on December 18th—the in-story “Sekai Kaihen no Hi” (World Alteration Day) when Nagato Yuki rewrote reality.
From opening day, February 6th, attendees will receive one of three randomly selected mini shikishi boards, each featuring a brand-new illustration by Itou Noizi of Haruhi, Yuki, and Kyon, drawn to commemorate the film’s 16th anniversary. These are limited in quantity, so fans will want to get to the theater early!
But that’s not all! The official Suzumiya Haruhi series X (formerly Twitter) account is also running a “World Alteration Day” campaign to win a B2-sized theater poster. To enter, just follow the account and repost the campaign announcement.
