The Booming World of Anime Films: Looking Back at 2025’s Trends
In recent years, the rise of anime films within the Japanese movie scene has been nothing short of remarkable. Looking at the 2025 box office rankings, the number one spot was claimed by Kimetsu no Yaiba: Mugen Ressha-hen (also known as Demon Slayer: Mugen Train), which was released in July and sparked a frenzy both domestically and internationally. It set a monumental record as the first Japanese film to surpass 100 billion yen in worldwide box office revenue, rewriting the record books with its unstoppable advance.
Adding to the buzz were films like the theatrical release Chainsaw Man: Reze-hen, the theatrical advance screening Kidou Senshi Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning-, and Meitantei Conan: Sekigan no Zanzou, all of which livened up the rankings and showcased the strength of Japanese anime works. Amidst this, it was also a year marked by many titles that demonstrated serious “oshi power” (fan devotion).
The Rise of Interactive “Audience Participation” Films!

Released on February 21, 2025, the film Hypnosis Mic -Division Rap Battle- debuted as the first-ever audience-participation “Interactive Movie” for a theatrical release. This unprecedented multi-ending film let the audience in the theater decide the outcome of the rap battles unfolding on screen through live voting. The plot, which changed in real-time based on votes from a dedicated smartphone app, featured a whopping 48 routes and 7 different endings. With 16 new songs to boot, fans flocked to theaters multiple times, driven by the desire to not only see the concert footage but to support their favorite Division to victory. This strong engagement propelled the film to surpass 2 billion yen at the box office.
National Tours… But for Movies!

Another novel release strategy was the national tour by QUARTET NIGHT… for a movie! Uta no Prince-sama Movie Maji Love ST☆RISH Tours kicked off its release week with nationwide screenings. From the following week, Japan was divided into four areas: North, East, West, and South. Theaters in each area featured panels of the corresponding members, and encore MC segments were spiced up with local talk from the member representing that region. This gave it a distinct tour-like feel, and even screenings in other areas had a strong live-viewing atmosphere, allowing fans to experience the sensation of following QUARTET NIGHT’s entire tour. Other films, like the theatrical anime KING OF PRISM -Your Endless Call- Minna Kirameke! Prism☆Tours, were released with “branching route screenings” where parts of the content would change, representing new attempts to get fans to visit theaters repeatedly.
However, we also saw fans who would buy tickets just to receive the theater bonuses, collect them, and then not actually enter the screening. Personally, I thought, if you’re going to do it, you might as well fill the seats too, right? Especially for films featuring live concert footage. That feeling of empty seats in a virtual concert venue is a bit sad from a fan’s perspective. But lately, with these varied approaches and different content, there’s been a clear effort to use every trick in the book not only to offer enticing bonuses but to make the movie itself something you genuinely want to see.
Notable Commemorative and Revival Screenings of Popular Works

2025 was also a year that caught our eye with commemorative and revival screenings of past popular works. For its 25th anniversary, the two Cardcaptor Sakura movies saw a revival theatrical run, drawing huge crowds of fans. Mononoke-hime (Princess Mononoke) became a hit all over again with a 4K digital remastered revival. Currently airing official spin-off manga adaptations like Girls & Panzer: Motto Love Love Sakusen desu! Dai Ichi Maku and the original Girls & Panzer der Film also had revival screenings to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the film’s release.

Then there were films that rekindled the passion for a series through “compilation” edits. Girls Band Cry Theatrical Compilation was released in two parts, reigniting the fiery spirit at the heart of the series. IDOLiSH7 First BEAT! Theatrical Compilation split the first season’s recap into two parts for theatrical release. The sound, especially during the live scenes, was exceptionally good, making the idols’ performances feel even more dynamic than when watched on TV. With cheering-style screenings, you could fully immerse yourself in the live concert atmosphere. It was a year that proved movie theaters are always waiting with anime works ready to strike a chord in someone’s heart.

Looking ahead to the Japanese anime film scene in 2026, numerous titles have already been announced. As expected, revival screenings will continue strongly into 2026. From unforgettable childhood classics like the theatrical The Adventures of Gamba and 7 Companions and Magical Angel Creamy Mami: Forever Once More that make adults’ hearts race, to titles like The Disappearance of Suzumiya Haruhi that feel like a “Youth Comeback!”—there seem to be many exciting encounters waiting at the theater.
Evolving Bonuses and Added Value: The Future Looks Bright

Furthermore, we can look forward to reminiscing about that final battle with Attack on Titan The Movie: THE LAST ATTACK, and with the “Mobile Suit Gundam” series now consistently releasing new works, the January release of Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway’s Flash – The Witch of Kilke is eagerly anticipated.
Additionally, theatrical productions have been announced for many popular anime series, so it looks like 2026 will be another year of frequent trips to the cinema. The evolution of enticing theater bonuses and compelling added-value content also shows no signs of slowing down. We hope movie theaters continue to be lively hubs of entertainment.
A final wish: For the common “random film cell” theater bonus, please choose the scenes more carefully! Lately, it’s been easy to get cells that are just distant shots of a glowing penlight concert floor (and there are several of them). Getting a cell from a scene you can’t even recognize, and not being able to trade it, is mentally damaging…
That said, the desire to collect a variety of theater bonuses is strong, and I look forward to weekly rotating goodies. Trading cards and stickers are great, of course, and coasters are very welcome too. With the increase in concert films lately, things like stickers designed for penlights might also be in demand. In 2026, I plan to keep actively heading to the movies.
