The Legacy Continues: A New Generation Rises
2026 marks the thrilling return of a classic! Yoroshinden Samurai Troopers, the official sequel to the 1988 series Yoroden Samurai Troopers, has begun airing this January. It’s been 35 years since the last attack from the evil spirits known as youja, and with humanity living in fear once more, the Japanese government has been secretly preparing. Their plan: train a “next generation of Samurai Troopers.” Their first move is deploying the special anti-youja unit, the “Defense Special Case Countermeasures Headquarters” (aka DST), who manage to capture a youja warrior in human form named Gai and place him under surveillance.
The first episode kicked off the battle from the perspective of Houjou Musashi, one of the next-gen Troopers. While it was revealed that Gai possesses the qualities of a Samurai Trooper, he himself remains a youja, an enemy to humanity. Even as a sequel to the 1988 series, the show made a strong impression with its completely shifted atmosphere and unpredictable developments, didn’t it?

Check out the spoiler-filled reaction summary for Episode 1 here.
And now, we’ve arrived at Episode 2. The first episode didn’t even feature a full transformation, or “arming,” into the Yoroi Gear. So, what did this second chapter have in store?
From hints about future plotlines to a fledgling hero’s moment of weakness and the hot-blooded battle scene that followed from it, let’s dive into the content along with the viewers’ reactions—neat details and all.
※Please be advised: The following text contains spoilers for the episode due to the nature of this topic. Proceed with caution if you have not seen it.

◆ Episode 2’s Heart-Stirring Moment: A Plea for Help
Despite being a special anti-youja unit, the Samurai Troopers were little more than a government PR tool, with no real will to protect people. As a result, four of the five members besides Houjou Musashi deserted, forcing the team to reorganize. The new candidate brought into the fold is Uesugi Kaito, a former Trooper cadet. While clashing with the youja warrior Gai, Kaito finds himself thrust onto the battlefield and begins to awaken to his potential as a Samurai Trooper.

At this point in Episode 2, they’ve only just started securing new personnel. The team isn’t just incomplete—only Gai and the Trooper administrator Oda Ryuusei have managed to arm their Yoroi Gear. Compared to the 1988 “senpai” team, who were about 80% ready to fight as Samurai Troopers from their first episode, the trio of Gai, Houjou Musashi, and Uesugi Kaito are essentially beginners with learner’s permits—they have the qualifications but need training.
Put side-by-side with the original, it might feel like a step back for a hero story, which likely left many viewers feeling a bit frustrated. But their inexperience is just proof they have many “walls to overcome.” It lets us imagine the dramatic developments and emotionally charged stories to come, making you excited to see how they’ll grow.

Uesugi Kaito, the episode’s true protagonist, delivered a heated story alongside Gai. When people trapped on a bus were attacked by youja, Kaito found himself in a situation where he wanted to help but couldn’t. In a tearful voice, he begged Gai, “Save those people!” And this was to Gai, a youja he was supposed to hate.
Gai coldly brushed him off with a single word. With his retreat cut off, Kaito tapped into his hidden resolve and shot down the “enemy he didn’t really want to fight” to save the people.
A hero’s desperate plea makes you want to cheer for them instantly. Meanwhile, Gai’s refusal to offer an easy hand, instead pushing Kaito away, carried a message of “a hero should handle that much on their own.” While there are still parts where they seem immature or hard to figure out as heroes, it’s a development that builds anticipation. Viewers reacted favorably, with comments like, “It’s gotten properly interesting, I’m relieved” and “It’s a more正统 (legitimate) sequel than I thought, and it’s fun!” Combined with the scene of the trapped people crying on the bus, it made for a seriously intense moment.

Another standout reaction was about the VHS tape seized as evidence. This relic of the past was a video tape format that 1980s anime fans used to record their favorite shows every week—a time with no DVDs, Blu-rays, or streaming in sight.
Playing the tape gave the DST team a glimpse into youja culture, but the crucial footage suddenly cut to a different recording of a live stage show. The tape had been recorded over! Viewers nostalgically chimed in with, “Getting recorded over is such a ‘VHS tape thing’!” and “I used to accidentally record over stuff all the time.” Some even mentioned the prevention method: “They should’ve broken the tab!”
And in the long-awaited arming scene, the familiar transformation sequence appeared, looking just like it did in 1988. Timelines erupted with, “The fabric is fluttering and the drum sound is there! I’ve been waiting for this!” and “The fabric! The fabric flew! Thank you!!” Furthermore, when viewers realized that the voice actress for Kaito’s grandmother, Yoshie, was Katsuki Masako—who played Kayura in the original Yoroden Samurai Troopers—joyful comments followed: “Grandma Yoshie’s voice is Katsuki Masako!” and “I saw the ending credits, and it *was* Katsuki!”

The end of Episode 2 introduced a new Samurai Trooper, Houjou Yamato, stoking anticipation for Episode 3. Since Yamato is Musashi’s older brother, will next week focus on a brotherly story? Also, when will we see the first arming of the Yoroi Gear for the others besides Gai and Ryuusei? The final youja emperor, Rama Ga, seems to have a hidden agenda, and depending on what that is, it might clear up existing mysteries like Rama Ga’s true identity or Gai’s humanity—definitely points to watch.

With the series still in its early stages, who knows what kind of plot twists await in Yoroshinden Samurai Troopers? Episode 3 will air on Tuesday, January 20th at 23:30 on various broadcast stations and streaming sites.
