What is Gintama All About?

Gintama is a hugely popular manga by Sorachi Hideaki that was serialized in Weekly Shounen Jump from December 2004 to June 2019, with worldwide cumulative circulation (including digital versions) hitting a staggering 73 million copies.

The story is set in Edo, a town where values were suddenly turned upside down after the invasion of the Amanto (aliens). In this anything-goes world filled with aliens, skyscrapers, bikes, and trains, there remains one samurai with an unchangeable “soul.” That man is Sakata Gintoki, known as Gin-san from the Yorozuya (Odd Jobs). He’s careless, reckless, and a hardcore sweet-tooth, but when it counts, he can be effortlessly cool… This exhilarating entertainment portrays the life of Gin-san and his companions in a way that will make you laugh, cry, and feel all warm inside.

A Legacy Across Media

Since its TV anime adaptation in 2006, the series has aired a total of 367 episodes over 13 years (with some breaks), and expanded into theatrical anime films, live-action movies, and streaming dramas. In October 2025, the spin-off novel 3-nen Z-gumi Ginpachi-sensei (original work: Sorachi Hideaki / author: Oosaki Tomohito) was also adapted into a TV anime, creating a major buzz. Furthermore, the new film Shin Gekijouban Gintama -Yoshiwara Daienjou- is set for release on Friday, February 13, 2026, delivering the gem-like “Yoshiwara Blaze Arc” as a completely new work, fueling even more excitement.
