Nihon Sangoku Episode 10 Brings Back Aoki’s Debate Skills and the Chilling Return of Heidono Ki

TV anime Nihon Sangoku Episode 10, titled “Kyouteki Saikai” (Reunion with a Bitter Enemy), aired on June 8, 2026. Fans erupted on social media as protagonist Sankaku Aoki finally made a proper appearance once again, delivering his trademark logical takedowns. Reactions like “Aoki ga kita!” and “Aoki no turn!” flooded timelines.

Nihon Sangoku is a manga by Matsuki Ikka, serialized in Shogakukan’s MangaONE app and Ura Sunday webcomic site. The story is set in a near-future Japan where civilization has collapsed after nuclear war, natural disasters, and corrupt rule. The nation has split into three warring states. A lowly local bureaucrat, Sankaku Aoki, rises through his vast knowledge and sharp rhetoric, aiming to unify the country once more.

The series has surpassed 1 million copies in cumulative circulation and was adapted into a TV anime directed by Terasawa Kazuaki and produced by Studio Kafka. The cast includes Ono Kensho (Sankaku Aoki), Fukuyama Jun (Asama Hoshinori), Seto Asami (Higashimachi Koki), and Pan Megumi (narration).

After executing his loyal retainer Toi Miyakichi under the law, Rin Toranosuke re-evaluates the system. A new military council introduces the “Winter General Operation” aimed at destroying the Yamato army. The plan lures Yamato reinforcements to the fortress area of Seirou, trapping them in Hokuriku’s harsh winter. However, viewers questioned the strategy: “Will they really chase that far?”, “Heidono Ki is sharp, he’ll see through it fast”, and “Burning your own cities while retreating won’t win public support.”

Meanwhile, Yamato faces a crisis: their strategist Kaku collapses. It turns out he had been using strong drugs in combination to continue serving despite multiple serious illnesses. Army physician Kada says recovery is possible, but social media worried: “Overdose…”, “His face is not even human-colored…”, “He pushed himself too hard…”

At the imperial capital, Aoki visits to request an audience with the emperor. The long-awaited protagonist’s return excited fans, but a sneering guard captain blocks him. Even after explaining his urgent war-related business, the guard treats him like garbage. Viewers criticized: “What is this jerk?”, “Is this guy Hei?”, “He’s asking for trouble lol”

The guard captain then demands a bribe. When Aoki protests that there is no request from the border army, the captain turns red and repeatedly flicks Aoki’s forehead so hard it leaves a mark. Viewers worried: “That looks painful…”, “That flick is strong, it’s bright red.” But then Aoki’s awaited debate time begins.

The guard captain claims summoning the emperor would be lèse-majesté. Aoki counters: “Do you think the emperor would prioritize sleep over urgent war matters? If my report is delayed and irreparable damage occurs, wouldn’t that be the real lèse-majesté?” Social media loved it: “Absolute truth punch”, “I love how Aoki pins him down with logic”, “No one can beat Aoki in a debate.”

Then, Interior Minister Heidono Ki appears. He praises Aoki’s logic but reveals he remembers Aoki’s wife Koki’s execution. The mood shifts instantly: “Ah, he remembers…”, “That he remembers is truly terrifying”, “This guy is dangerous…” In the next moment, the guard captain’s head is cleanly severed.

Elsewhere, Hoshinori grumbles about Aoki while diligently making rice balls. Inwardly he thinks “There’s no way he’ll get an audience with the emperor” and “What a pain,” but he still tells his subordinates to cancel his evening plans with a woman. Even he is shaken by his own behavior: “Is he really trusting Aoki?” Viewers laughed: “Tsune-chan-san www”, “His thoughts and actions don’t match w”, “He likes that boring guy too much lol”

Thanks to Heidono Ki’s arrangement, Aoki finally meets the emperor. Despite the tense situation, Emperor Fuji III remains ditsy—he falls asleep, then randomly praises Aoki’s achievements with “Sugoi yan jibun!” Viewers found him “cute.”

Heidono Ki’s terrifying nature escalates. He feigns sorrow that his son Totsugu is injured, but viewers saw through it: “He doesn’t mean a word of that”, “Even his son is just a political tool”, “He has no blood or tears…”

Heidono Ki blames Ryuumon for the situation and proposes stripping his military authority. Everyone present agrees, and the emperor is about to appoint Heidono as successor when Aoki objects: “The granting of military authority and deployment should be reconsidered.” Ministers think: “Ah, he’s dead”, “Decapitation confirmed.” A female minister mocks Aoki for seeking publicity, but Aoki laughs back: “A minister believing rumors and arguing before the emperor?” This starts a second debate round. Social media cheers: “Two debate rounds!”, “Aoki’s turn!”, “He’s effective, lol”, “Go Aoki!”

When Heidono asks who would be suitable as successor, Aoki answers “No one is suitable,” then adds: “You should not send reinforcements to Fukui.” The room stirs. Heidono stares coldly: “Then why did you come here?” Aoki drops a bomb: “I seek an imperial rescript for withdrawal.” Episode 10 ends on that note. Viewers are baffled: “Withdrawal!?”, “What does this mean!?”, “What is he thinking…” What are the strategies entrusted by Ryuumon and Kaku? Will Aoki’s withdrawal plan save his comrades on the front lines? Episode 11 airs on June 15 (Monday). (World’s fastest streaming on Prime Video every Sunday at 21:00.)
