On June 13, 2026, the MUSIC AWARDS JAPAN 2026 ceremony was held at TOYOTA ARENA TOKYO, celebrating the most impactful artists and works both domestically and internationally over the past year. The awards, among the largest of their kind in Japan, drew attention from music fans and industry figures alike.

Sakanaction’s ‘Kaijuu’ Takes Best Anime Song

In the Best Anime Song category, the winner was Sakanaction’s “Kaijuu” — the theme song for the TV anime Chi: Chikyuu no Undou ni Tsuite (broadcast on NHK General from October 2024). The track was praised for perfectly capturing the anime’s world with Sakanaction’s meticulous, avant-garde sound and lyrical depth.

Upon receiving the award, vocalist/guitarist Yamaguchi Ichiro expressed his joy: “Actually, this is Sakanaction’s first TV anime theme song. We hadn’t received many offers for anime themes before, but the original manga artist Uoto and others pushed for us, and we’re truly grateful to receive this award.”

Sakanaction also swept an additional seven awards in other categories for the same song and related projects, including Best Song, Best Rock Song, Best Music Video, Best Artwork (in association with the Japan Graphic Designers Association). Their live tour SAKANAQUARIUM 2025 “Kaijuu” earned Best Live Lighting Staff (in association with the Japan Stage Technical Staff Union Federation) and Best Live Sound Staff. The band itself won Best Rock Band/Solo Artist, bringing their total to eight awards.

Kenshi Yonezu Dominates Global Regions with ‘IRIS OUT’

Kenshi Yonezu, whose song “IRIS OUT” served as the theme for the 2025 theatrical film Chainsaw Man, took home Best J-POP Song. He also won Best Japanese Song in Asia, Europe, North America, and Latin America, affirming the track’s worldwide success. Under his alias Hachi, he additionally received the Best Digital Culture Artist award.

The Best Background Music (Anime) award went to the original anime LAZARUS produced by MAPPA, whose score was handled by Kamasi Washington, Bonobo, and Floating Points — a lineup that generated considerable buzz.

HANA and Mrs. GREEN APPLE Shine

HANA, who also gained attention for her work on the TV anime Medalist theme “Cold Night,” won Best New Artist. She added awards for Best Dance & Vocal Song (“Blue Jeans”) and Best Dance & Vocal Artist, showcasing a presence well beyond that of a newcomer.

Mrs. GREEN APPLE, who performed the second season opening theme “lulu.” for Sousou no Frieren, won three awards: Best Artist, Best J-POP Artist, and a special Fanbase Award, highlighting their immense popularity.

The MUSIC AWARDS JAPAN 2026 saw anime-related tracks and artists dominating major categories, recognizing how music enhances the storytelling of anime and resonates with fans. The ceremony once again underscored the fruitful relationship between anime and music, leaving fans eager for next year’s outstanding contributions.
