Yonezu Kenshi’s new song “Karasu” (烏), written as the 2026 NHK soccer theme, has received a short anime that is already generating buzz. The animation was produced by MAPPA, the acclaimed studio behind hits like Chainsaw Man. This marks the third collaboration between Yonezu Kenshi and MAPPA, following the Chainsaw Man TV anime opening theme “KICK BACK” in 2022 and the theme song “IRIS OUT” for the 2025 theatrical film Chainsaw Man – Reze Arc.

Song Concept and Short Anime
“Karasu” was created with soccer as its theme, a sport Yonezu Kenshi has loved for years. The song reflects the idea of being part of a group that shares the goal of winning, while each individual remains independent. Yonezu aimed to let a “draft of air” blow gently through the competitive structure. The short anime was made to match the first chorus of the song. It uses a pencil-drawn style reminiscent of a “manga world,” depicting a player earnestly chasing the ball, while a single crow soars powerfully overhead into the sky.

Chart Success
“Karasu” was released digitally on June 15, 2026, and achieved six chart crowns in its first week. On Billboard JAPAN, it reached No. 1 on the Japan Hot 100 (Yonezu’s 32nd overall No. 1), Streaming Songs, Download Songs, and Japan Hot Shot Songs. On Oricon, it topped the weekly streaming ranking (dated June 29, 2026) and the weekly digital single (single track) ranking (also dated June 29, 2026). This marks Yonezu’s 20th No. 1 on Oricon, the most for a solo artist in history.

The Japan national team secured an impressive victory against Tunisia and will face Sweden in their final group stage match on June 26 (Friday) at 8:00 a.m. (JST). “Karasu” will be played during NHK’s soccer broadcasts and related programs on NHK General, NHK BS Premium 4K, and other channels. As the world heats up this summer, the battle for the top continues, accompanied by “Karasu” coloring the pitch.
