After three decades, the cult classic cooking manga Tetsunabe no Jan! is finally getting an anime adaptation. Premiering July 5, 2026 on TV Tokyo, the series by Saijou Shinji has sold over 10 million copies but was never adapted due to its extreme content. Now, fans who have read the original are buzzing with anticipation—and anxiety.

Why the Long Wait? The “Demonic Style” Unleashed
Note: The following contains spoilers for those unfamiliar with the source material.
Protagonist Akiyama Jan (Shou) is no typical cooking manga hero. He laughs maniacally, is arrogant and ruthless, and will use any means to win—from drugging judges with magic mushrooms (legal at the time) to sabotaging opponents’ dishes by triggering sprinklers. The manga’s raw depictions of preparing pigeon blood and harassment scenes were considered too extreme even in the relatively lax Heisei era. The recently released “Main PV (Ura ver)” teases “suspicious ingredients,” “ethical violations,” and “abusive language,” making it clear the production team is deliberately challenging modern compliance standards. This is exactly why manga readers are both nervous and excited.
“Cooking is Battle” – The Philosophy and Realism
Despite his flaws, Jan’s unwavering belief that “cooking is battle” gives his dishes undeniable weight. He spares no effort—staying up all night to prepare, fighting through injuries, and even filling judges so full that they cannot eat competitors’ dishes. His techniques are backed by real expertise: the original manga featured supervision by cooking researcher Oyama Keiko, and the anime brings in culinary specialists Satou Takako and Higuchi Naoya, with top restaurants providing cooperation. Jan’s dark hero appeal rests on the fact that, no matter how broken his personality, the taste and theory behind his cooking are authentic.
The All-Japan Chinese Chef Championship and Clash of “Isms”
The true core of the story is not the extreme content but the battles between chefs with distinct philosophies. The “All-Japan Chinese Chef Championship” brings Jan face-to-face with rivals such as Gobanchou Kiriko, who believes “cooking is heart”; Celine Yang with “cooking is kotekote (over-the-top)”; Sawada Kei with “cooking is flame”; Jun Chihiro with “cooking is tradition”; and Kawahara Yuuji with “cooking is science.” Each chef’s unwavering “ism” drives them to create their best dish, and Jan’s forceful victories over them captivate viewers. This tournament arc is the story’s peak.
Sound and Visuals – A Unique Collaboration
Voice actor Togashi Kikunosuke takes on Jan’s maniacal laugh and arrogant lines, while Hasegawa Ikumi (Gobanchou Kiriko) and M·A·O (Celine Yang) bring tension to the rival exchanges. The opening theme is “Kaen” by Genin wa Jibun ni Aru., and the ending theme is “Naita Akuma” by Emu ni Mini. A special pre-broadcast program “Tetsunabe no Ryuuji!” airs July 4 at 9:30 AM on six TV Tokyo stations, featuring cooking researcher Ryuuji, Togashi Kikunosuke, and Yamada Kouji (Time Machine 3-gou). Collaborations include a pop-up at Yokohama Chinatown and special menus at the game-and-insect restaurant “Kome to Circus” in Takadanobaba and Shibuya PARCO from July 18 to October 12.
