Suupaa no Ura de Yani Suu Futari Cast Shares Behind-the-Scenes Stories in Special ABEMA Program

A special program for the anime Suupaa no Ura de Yani Suu Futari (Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You) aired exclusively free on ABEMA on July 4, 2026, from 20:30 to 21:30. Titled “Suupaa no Ura de Yani Suu Futari Special Program ~ABEMA no Tokuban de Katariau Sannin~”, the show featured main cast members Satou Takuya (Sasaki), Hoshiki Seina (Yamada/Tayama), and Takahashi Shinya (Suzuki) as they delved into character creation, recording behind-the-scenes, and more.

The original manga by Jinushi began serialization on Twitter (now X) on March 9, 2022. The first chapter garnered over 280,000 likes, sparking a major buzz. It is now serialized in Monthly Big Gangan (Square Enix). The series won first place in the Web Manga category of the “Next Manga Award 2022” and has surpassed 3 million copies in print as of January 2026.

During the program, the cast first shared their impressions upon reading the original work. Satou enthusiastically said, “After finishing the first chapter, I was drawn in wondering what would happen next. Now I can’t wait for the latest volume to come out. I’m a fan!” Hoshiki commented, “It depicts the subtle ways adults close the distance, which can’t be expressed in words like love or friendship. It’s very detailed.”

Regarding the dual role of Yamada/Tayama, Hoshiki explained her approach: “The tone and way of producing voice are completely different, so I made sure to adjust my mindset before producing the sound.” For the idol-like Yamada, she focused on an idol-like presence, while for Tayama, she paid attention to the breath and nuances that come out when relaxed.

When asked about ad-libs, Takahashi insisted, “I follow the script!” but Hoshiki retorted, “He doesn’t change the script, but he adds a lot.” Satou added, “He pushes it to the very last second before the opening starts. His way of leaving a mark is intense!” The studio burst into laughter.

The cast then selected their favorite scenes from the ABEMA exclusive pre-release version. All three chose the scene from episode 2 where Sasaki comforts Tayama after she receives a complaint from a customer about smelling like cigarettes. Sasaki says, “It’s lonely. The moment you learn a different side… you can no longer believe in that person you thought was wonderful. But both sides are that person.” Satou admitted, “Frankly, this scene was very difficult. It doesn’t elevate smokers nor put down non-smokers. It’s just Sasaki letting out his thoughts.” He revealed that they consulted repeatedly with the director, sound director, and original author Jinushi to find the right approach. Hoshiki said, “The direction aimed for a delicate line, and I chose this scene to let people hear how amazing Satou-san is at delivering it naturally.” Takahashi added, “The line ‘Both sides are that person’ hit me hard.”

Takahashi also picked a scene from episode 1 where Suzuki helps Sasaki, saying it allowed him to express the switch between a capable worker and a joker. Hoshiki chose a scene from episode 3 where Tayama gazes at a gift from Sasaki, describing it as a scene full of Tayama’s kindness and thoughtfulness.

In the latter half of the program, a “simple break space” was set up in the studio, and the cast held a special segment called “ABEMA no Tokuban de Sarani Katariau Sannin!” where they chatted about the series while holding cocoa cigarettes (candy cigarettes). Topics included passionate performances and scenes they felt sympathy for. Satou noted, “For Sasaki, if you put too much passion, it becomes different. So I put passion into not putting passion.”

A particularly lively part was the “script notes” talk, where the cast showed their actual scripts. Satou revealed a note he wrote for a scene in episode 2 where Tayama pulls his mouth: he wrote “聞こえたい” (want to be heard) on the script, recalling the director’s instruction to make sure the dialogue is understandable despite the mouth being pulled. Hoshiki explained she used pink lines for Tayama’s lines and yellow for Yamada’s, and sometimes had to speak with Tayama’s feelings even when the line was for Yamada. She also mentioned keeping character setting notes from author Jinushi. Takahashi showed his script filled with ad-lib ideas, prompting Hoshiki to laugh, “They were all funny. I want to see them all!” Satou praised Takahashi’s ad-lib as “craftsmanship.”

As the program came to a close, Takahashi said, “I watched the ABEMA pre-release version, and with visuals and sound, it was incredibly fun! I highly recommend it!” Hoshiki commented, “This is a work that lets you take a breather like a smoking area. I hope it can be by your side in your daily life.” Satou added, “I hope viewers think, ‘I watched Yani Suu today.’ It’s a heartwarming yet slightly thrilling spice for a wonderful day.”
