World is Dancing Episode 2 Delivers Heartbreaking Twist: Viewers Left in Tears Over Shirabyoshi’s Fate

The historical anime World is Dancing, based on Mihara Kazuto’s manga about the life of Zeami (the founder of Noh), began airing on July 2, 2026. Set in the Nanbokucho period, the story follows Kiyoyasha (Zeami) as he discovers the power of dance. The second episode, which aired on July 9, has left viewers stunned and emotional.

※ Spoilers for Episode 2 follow.

A Breathtaking Turn of Events

After being captivated by the fierce dance of a shirabyoshi (a white-robed dancer) in Episode 1, Kiyoyasha becomes eager to learn. He visits the dancer, who once had a chance to perform before the shogun but now suffers from an incurable illness (tuberculosis). She sells her body to survive. Kiyoyasha, along with his friends Ishiya and Kogane, begins to visit her regularly, and she teaches them dance. However, the desperate, life-burning quality that Kiyoyasha admired in her dance disappears when his father, Kanami, pays her for her performance. Kiyoyasha is furious, throwing the money back at his father, but he soon realizes his selfishness when the shirabyoshi dies.

Episode 2 opens with Kiyoyasha falling into a river, where he grasps the importance of kata (form). Viewers nodded at the lesson: “There is such a thing as being formless or breaking the mold, but form is essential.” Kiyoyasha seeks the shirabyoshi’s dance again, but only she can give him that feeling. Initially dismissive of the “rich kids,” the shirabyoshi warms to Kiyoyasha’s innocent enthusiasm. Fans noted her harsh reality: “Ah, that’s how it is… work time… only Kiyoyasha doesn’t get it.”

As the trio visits regularly, they learn from her. But Kiyoyasha still misses the desperate dance from that first night. The shirabyoshi, despairing over her situation, tells him, “You have a body, don’t you!” — a line that struck viewers: “The weight of those words is different…” She then performs one last, fierce dance, saying, “If only I could dance on a grand stage just once…” Fans were breathless: “That’s a dance of life itself…” “Her dance and life force take your breath away.”

Kiyoyasha finally sees the dance he wanted, but it comes from a tragic reality. When Kanami pays the shirabyoshi, Kiyoyasha accuses his father of ruining the dance. Viewers sided with Kanami: “Paying for work is only right.” But Kiyoyasha’s outburst — “It was good because she had nothing” — drew criticism: “That’s selfish.”

The shirabyoshi’s sudden death makes Kiyoyasha realize his mistake. He vows to carry on her dance. Fans were moved: “He had to say goodbye in the worst way…” “He’ll carry that weight for life.” “I cried so much.” “This episode perfectly shows the theme and direction of the series.”

The next episode airs on July 16. Fans are eager to see how Kiyoyasha’s dance changes.
