August 9 marks Moomin Day, a celebration established in 2005 to honor the 60th anniversary of the first Moomin novel and the birthday of creator Tove Jansson. This year, fans can look forward to a fresh lineup of colorful handkerchiefs that bring the whimsical world of Moominvalley to everyday life.
The Moomin series, created by Finnish author and illustrator Tove Jansson, follows the adventures of the round, white Moomin family along with beloved characters like the traveler Snufkin and the mischievous Little My. The franchise has captivated audiences worldwide, and in Japan it gained popularity through the 1969 TV anime, the 1990 series Tanoshii Moomin Ikka, and the 2019 CG anime Moominvalley. The same year also saw the opening of Moominvalley Park in Hanno, Saitama.
New Handkerchief Collection for Moomin Day
The new handkerchiefs are part of a “daydreaming moomin valley” series, featuring artwork that shows Moomin and his friends lost in happy imaginings. Bright, cheerful colors and playful designs make these handkerchiefs a joy to look at and use.

Soft and comfortable, the 3-layer gauze handkerchief (approx. 34 × 34 cm) is perfect for casual daily use. Priced at 715 yen (tax included).
Printed Handkerchief
The printed handkerchief (approx. 53 × 53 cm) can be used as a fashion accessory—tied to a bag or worn around the neck. Some designs feature Moomin and friends spread across the entire cloth for a bold, fun look. Priced at 880 yen (tax included).
Towel Handkerchief
The towel handkerchief (approx. 25 × 25 cm) features flower motifs and Nordic colors, with a cute embroidered Little My accent. Priced at 660 yen (tax included).
The 3-layer gauze and printed handkerchiefs are scheduled for release from mid-July 2026, while the towel handkerchief will be available from early July 2026. They will be sold at the official online shop of Intermode Kawabe, the company’s direct stores, and at handkerchief sections in select department stores and specialty shops.
