What happens after two people start dating? Most romance manga end with the confession, leaving the rest to imagination. Tamifuru’s ‘Tsuki atte agete mo ii kana’ (published by Shogakukan under the Ura Shonen Sunday Comics label) flips that script, focusing entirely on the messy, real-life relationship that begins after the words “I’ll go out with you.”
The series, a landmark GL (girls’ love) comic, has amassed over 100 million cumulative views in Japan and sold more than 1 million copies worldwide. It has been translated into multiple languages including English, Thai, German, Korean, and Traditional Chinese. Now, a live-action drama adaptation has been greenlit, set to premiere on September 10, 2026 on MBS’s Drama Tokku timeslot. The drama will also be streamed simultaneously worldwide except in Japan and South Korea.

Note: The following contains mild spoilers.
Love Doesn’t End at the Confession
Most romance stories treat the moment two people get together as the climax. ‘Tsuki atte agete mo ii kana’ begins right there. The protagonists, university students Miwa and Saeko, become a couple not through a dramatic confession but through a casual, almost offhand reply: “I guess I’ll go out with you.” That ambiguity sets the tone for a story that refuses to idealize love.
The manga follows the two women as they navigate everyday life together—clashing over values, struggling to communicate jealousy and insecurity, and learning that “liking” someone isn’t enough to sustain a relationship. Sex is depicted not as a goal or a symbol of union, but as an awkward, honest part of getting to know each other. The series treats intimacy as an ongoing dialogue rather than a destination.
Because Miwa and Saeko are a same-sex couple, the story also quietly addresses coming-out anxieties and how society views their relationship. But it never sensationalizes these issues. Instead, it weaves them naturally into the universal difficulty of building and maintaining a connection with another person.

After an eight-year run, the manga has concluded, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most acclaimed GL works of the 2010s–2020s. Its honest portrayal of love as a daily practice—not a single event—has resonated with readers far beyond the yuri genre.
