Dai Chōhen Tarōman Banpaku Dai Bakuhatsu Gets Nationwide Re-Screening for 1st Anniversary Starting August 22

One year after its explosive debut, Dai Chōhen Tarōman Banpaku Dai Bakuhatsu is returning to theaters nationwide. The film will be re-screened from August 22, 2026, exactly one year after its original release date, giving fans another chance to experience the wild fusion of artist Taro Okamoto and tokusatsu on the big screen.

The movie is an extension of the TV series TAROMAN: Okamoto Tarō-shiki Tokusatsu Katsugeki, which originally aired on NHK E Tele in a late-night slot and gained traction through word of mouth. The film presents itself as a lost tokusatsu hero show from the 1970s, blending Okamoto’s iconic art style with classic special effects.

The story begins in 1970, when a terrifying strange beast from the future attacks the Expo site. The narrative then leaps to 2025, depicted as a futuristic world imagined from a 1970s perspective: geometric buildings, cars moving through transparent pipes, and a city in communication with space. It is a world that once made children’s eyes sparkle with wonder, and now Tarōman fights there.

When the film first opened on August 22, 2025, fans of the TV series flooded theaters. Word of mouth spread rapidly, leading to sold-out screenings. The audience was diverse, including cosplaying families, male film fans, and even light female viewers in their 20s, making it a sleeper hit.

Now, exactly one year later, the re-screening promises the same outrageous experience. As the film’s tagline goes, “Nanda kore wa!” (What is this!) — a befitting reaction to this delightfully absurd cinematic ride.
