The otaku stalker plot from last week resolves in the most Grand Blue way possible: not with a tense confrontation, but with a drinking contest, a porn game discovery, and a marriage proposal. Episode 3 takes the foreign tourist thread and spins it into a full-blown celebration of how this show treats every obsession, whether it’s diving, alcohol, or 2D girls, with the same dead-serious absurdity. The result is an episode that somehow makes a hentai culture lecture feel like a natural extension of the ryokan arc.
The Stalker Plan Goes Exactly as Expected (Badly)
Iori and Kouhei’s big plan to catch the stalkers red-handed collapses the moment they enter the Pine Room. The foreign otaku are not lurking in the shadows; they’re sitting around a table with maps and photos, looking exactly like a fan club planning a pilgrimage. Iori’s “Guilty as sin” and Kouhei’s “It’s fishy how everything looks perfectly normal” land because the show knows we’ve been waiting for this collision. The guys are so ready to play heroes that they completely miss the obvious: these tourists are not a threat, they’re kindred spirits.
The drinking contest that follows is classic Grand Blue chaos. Iori and Kouhei, as PaB members, cannot back down from a challenge even when the “booze” turns out to be sickly sweet liqueur. The visual of them standing victorious over a room of collapsed foreigners, declaring the sweet stuff a mere chaser, is the kind of dumb physical comedy the series has perfected. But the real punchline comes after, when Kouhei connects the dots: if these guys are in the same fan club as Carina, then she’s just as deep into this as they are.
Carina’s Hentai Culture Deep Dive
The bath scene with Chisa, Shiori, and Carina is where the episode shifts from a stalker farce into something stranger and funnier. Carina’s polite request to learn about “Japan’s hentai culture” lands like a grenade in the middle of a normal hot springs etiquette lesson. Chisa and Shiori’s frozen reactions, Shiori’s quiet “Hentai culture…?” and Carina’s immediate clarification that she means Hokusai’s erotica, not modern stuff, is a perfect bait-and-switch. But Carina’s real interest quickly surfaces: she wants to reenact Blue Spring scenes, and she’s thrilled that Chisa and Shiori look exactly like the game’s CGs when naked.
The show plays this with a straight face, which makes it even funnier. Carina’s internal monologue about a giant octopus turning the bath into a Hokusai shunga scene is delivered with the same scholarly enthusiasm she used for onsen etiquette. Shiori’s growing horror, her whispered “Chisa-neesama, did you feel her gaze just now?” and Chisa’s complete obliviousness, creates a wonderful comedic disconnect. Chisa has been leered at so often in this series that she’s developed an immunity; she just agrees to hang out in Carina’s room without a second thought. Shiori’s realization that Chisa is “used to getting leered at all the time” is a small, sharp character beat that reminds you how much absurdity these characters have normalized.
Iori’s Drunken Hero Moment
While the girls are navigating Carina’s otaku enthusiasm, Iori and Kouhei are having their own crisis. Kouhei’s discovery that Blue Spring is a porn game sends him into full otaku solidarity mode. The scene where he bonds with the foreign guys over their shared love of the game, language barrier be damned, is genuinely sweet in a ridiculous way. The image of them all kowtowing together, Kouhei offering to teach the proper technique, is the kind of cross-cultural connection only Grand Blue would attempt.
Iori’s attempt to stop them from reenacting any scenes with Shiori leads to the episode’s most unexpected moment. When Kouhei asks what he’ll do if they refuse, Iori’s drunken, half-conscious speech about Shiori always trying to live up to expectations, about his fear as her brother, cuts through the comedy. The show doesn’t linger on it; Iori passes out mid-sentence, and the moment is immediately undercut by Shiori watching the recording later and muttering “brother shittiest.” But the fact that the sentiment is there at all, buried under layers of alcohol and stupidity, is what makes it work. Iori’s protective instinct is real, even if his execution is a disaster.
Shiori’s Quiet Surrender
Shiori’s decision to return the passport without a fight is the episode’s quietest and most interesting beat. She watches the recording of Iori’s drunken speech, sees him passed out on his feet, and something shifts. Her earlier manipulation, the smiling threats, the hostage situation, all of it evaporates. She simply hands over the passport and tells him to have fun in Palau.
The show doesn’t explain her reasoning, and that’s the right call. Maybe she saw that her brother, for all his flaws, genuinely cares. Maybe she realized the ryokan succession battle was never going to be won through passport theft. Or maybe she just decided that dealing with Carina’s marriage proposal was punishment enough. Whatever the reason, the moment lands because it’s underplayed. Iori’s confusion, Chisa’s “Don’t ask me,” and the cut to the next scene leave the emotional weight hanging without milking it.
Carina’s sudden marriage declaration, by the way, is the perfect capper. Her logic is impeccable in its insanity: Iori showed interest in her by trying to stop her friends, he seems tolerant of otaku culture, and marrying him would make Shiori her younger sister, opening the door to “hentai donburi business.” The way she delivers this with complete sincerity, while Chisa and Shiori stare in disbelief, is peak Grand Blue. The show never judges its characters for their obsessions; it just lets them collide and watches the sparks fly.
One Last Thought
This episode could have been a simple stalker takedown, but instead it became a meditation on the many forms of otaku passion, from the foreign fans’ pilgrimage to Carina’s academic interest in hentai culture to Kouhei’s unwavering 2D devotion. The fact that it also advanced Iori and Shiori’s relationship, however slightly, and returned the passport to its owner, is almost an afterthought. That’s the Grand Blue way: the plot moves forward while everyone is too drunk or too distracted by porn games to notice. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
