The long-awaited new film in the Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica series, Gekijouban Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica: Walpurgis no Kaiten, is set to open in Japanese theaters on August 28, 2026. This completely new work is the direct sequel to the 2013 film Rebellion, and reunites the core staff including director Shinbou Akiyuki, scriptwriter Urobuchi Gen, and character designer Aoki Ume.
What is Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica?
The original TV anime Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica aired in 2011 and became a major phenomenon. It follows an ordinary middle school girl, Kaname Madoka, as she is drawn into the world of magical girls who fight witches. Directed by Shinbou Akiyuki, with scripts by Urobuchi Gen (Nitroplus) and original character designs by Aoki Ume, the series is known for its cute visuals, unpredictable plot, and the avant-garde world design by Gekidan Inu Curry, along with dramatic music by Kajiura Yuki.
In 2012, the TV series was re-edited into two theatrical compilation films, Beginning Story and Eternal Story. In 2013, the new film Rebellion was released, becoming the first late-night anime theatrical film to exceed 2 billion yen at the box office. The franchise has since expanded into manga, games, and figures.
Movie Overview
Gekijouban Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica: Walpurgis no Kaiten is the long-awaited completely new sequel to Rebellion. It was originally scheduled for winter 2024, but was delayed to winter 2025 due to production circumstances. In July 2025, a February 2026 release was announced, but on January 23, 2026, the release was postponed again. The film is now set for August 28, 2026.
Story
In the city of Mitakihara, Kaname Madoka is a slightly shy middle school girl. After learning about magical girls who fight witches, she becomes involved in their battles. Grieving over the fallen magical girls, she wishes to Kyubey to erase all witches before they are born. As a result, Madoka becomes a transcendent concept known as the ‘Law of Cycles,’ and the world is remade without witches.
Akemi Homura, carrying Madoka’s final will, vows to continue fighting the ‘Wraiths’ that now appear in place of witches. She dreams of being guided by the Law of Cycles and lives her daily life as a magical girl. However, she begins to notice cracks in her everyday life and eventually realizes a decisive truth: Madoka, who should not exist in this world, is present. This world is a fabricated space created by Homura, who is turning into a witch, to reclaim her days with Madoka.
The magical girls unite to thwart Kyubey’s schemes, but this means acknowledging that Homura has become a witch and Madoka is a being detached from the world as the Law of Cycles. In the final moment, Homura, unwilling to lose Madoka, becomes a ‘demon’ who degrades the god-like Madoka and remakes the world herself.
In Mitakihara, a rumor spreads among the girls: a ‘Lizard Phone’ grants wishes in exchange for fighting the world’s curses. Meanwhile, a girl without a Soul Gem is hunting Wraiths, an abnormal situation. Homura watches this scene calmly, ruling over the world as a demon. But then, beings appear to end this distorted daily life: the origin of all witches, Nazuka Sokotsune, the collective of witches that once tormented Homura—Walpurgisnacht—and two magical girls seeking the Law of Cycles. They declare, ‘We will not forgive Akemi Homura.’
In a world that has lost the Law of Cycles, the fate of magical girls begins to turn once again.

Characters
Kaname Madoka
A girl who wished to save all magical girls and became a being equal to a god, known as the ‘Law of Cycles.’ At the end of Rebellion, Homura stole Madoka’s human memories from the Law of Cycles, and as a result, she now lives as an ordinary second-year middle school student at Mitakihara Middle School.
Akemi Homura
A girl who contracted with Kyubey to change Madoka’s fate, gaining the ability to travel through time. In Rebellion, her feelings for Madoka led her to alter the world and become a demon. In the altered Mitakihara, she spends her days with Madoka as she pleases.
Miki Sayaka
Madoka’s lively best friend. She contracted with Kyubey to heal her childhood friend Kamijou Kyousuke’s injury, but accumulated curses and became a witch. In Rebellion, she returned to the living world as an envoy of the Law of Cycles.
Sakura Kyoko
A competitive magical girl from the neighboring city Kazamino. She saw her own past in Sayaka and cared for her, but Sayaka became a witch, and Kyoko stayed by her side until the end. In Rebellion, she transferred to Mitakihara Middle School and lived at Sayaka’s house.
Momoe Nagisa
Once a girl who loved cheese. In Rebellion, she appeared as Bebe alongside Mami, but her true identity is an envoy of the Law of Cycles, like Sayaka. She is younger than the others and acts innocently, but sometimes shows a sharp side.
Tomoe Mami
A third-year at Mitakihara Middle School and a senior to Madoka and the others. She has long experience as a magical girl and is a reliable older sister figure. Her ribbon can generate weapons, and her ultimate move, Tiro Finale, is one of the most powerful in the series.

A mysterious creature that appears to girls and grants their wishes in exchange for turning them into magical girls. It speaks in a friendly and intelligent manner, but its true purpose is to use the energy generated when magical girls despair and become witches to extend the life of the universe. In Rebellion, it tried to use Homura, who was becoming a witch, to control the Law of Cycles, but was stopped by Homura after she became a demon.

Theater Perks
From the opening day, a first-come visitor bonus of a ‘Magica Quartet Special Shikishi’ will be distributed. This shikishi features a collaborative message from general director Shinbou Akiyuki, scriptwriter Urobuchi Gen, and original character designer Aoki Ume.

Collaborations
CONVERSE TOKYO
A collaboration with fashion brand CONVERSE TOKYO focuses on the 2013 film Rebellion, featuring T-shirts, acrylic stands, and original drawings. Artist Samehoshi, known for depicting transformations with pale colors and fine lines, has drawn the six characters: Kaname Madoka, Akemi Homura, Tomoe Mami, Miki Sayaka, Sakura Kyoko, and Momoe Nagisa.
The items are available at all CONVERSE TOKYO stores (excluding Gotemba Outlet) and the official online store from August 21, 2026.
ROUND1
From the film’s release date, August 28, 2026, ROUND1 will offer collaboration menus and collaboration rooms. Ordering eligible menu items at participating stores will give you exclusive novelties: a ‘Pop-up Coaster’ from August 28 to October 14, and a ‘Clear Card’ from October 15 to November 29.
Additionally, collaboration packs will be sold at 98 bowling alleys, 93 karaoke venues, 55 Spocha locations, 47 billiards halls, and 75 darts venues nationwide. Using these packs grants exclusive novelties: a ‘Visual Mat’ in the first half and an ‘A4 Clear Poster’ in the second half.
anan Magazine
The September 2, 2026 issue of ‘anan’ (No. 2510) will feature Kaname Madoka and Akemi Homura on the cover in newly drawn illustrations. The feature will include interviews with cast and staff, exploring the series’ appeal.
Sunshine City Prince Hotel
A collaboration with Sunshine City Prince Hotel in Ikebukuro, Tokyo, runs from August 22 to October 12, 2026. Newly drawn visuals of the six characters—Kaname Madoka, Akemi Homura, Tomoe Mami, Miki Sayaka, Sakura Kyoko, and Momoe Nagisa—will be used for immersive lodging and dining experiences. Exclusive amenities include a cushion, compact mirror, hotel card key, and character fine hotel card key holder. The collaboration restaurant IKEPRI CANVAS will offer a total of 58 dishes in two phases.
