Shimajiro, the beloved character from Benesse Corporation’s early childhood educational correspondence course Kodomo Challenge, has taken social media by storm after the official X account posted a delightfully bizarre photo of the character sitting on a bench, staring blankly into the distance.
Shimajiro has been a familiar face in Kodomo Challenge since the program began in 1988, and has also charmed audiences in TV anime series such as Shimashima Tora no Shimajiro and Shimajiro no Wow!.
However, on September 2, 2026, the official Shimajiro X account left fans scratching their heads. Along with the caption “Oya? Shimajiro nai ka?”—roughly translating to “Huh? Shimajiro, are you in a void?”—the account shared a photo of Shimajiro sitting alone on a bench with a completely blank expression. The cloudy sky and the grass in the foreground give the image a sneaky, candid-camera feel, making the whole scene unintentionally hilarious.
