The new theatrical film Gekijouban Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica: Walpurgis no Kaiten has crossed the 1.5 billion yen mark at the Japanese box office within just 10 days of release. Attendance has also surpassed 900,000, and the film is now closing in on one million viewers.
The film is the latest entry in the Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica franchise, which began as a TV anime series in 2011. The story follows middle school student Madoka Kaname as she encounters a mysterious opportunity to become a magical girl. The series was later compiled into two theatrical films in 2012, followed by the new story Hangyaku no Monogatari (Rebellion) in 2013. Now, the sequel to that film, Walpurgis no Kaiten, opened in Japanese theaters on August 28, 2026.
According to official figures, from August 28 to September 6, the film drew 904,721 viewers and earned 1,537,959,580 yen. It took the number one spot in both attendance and box office revenue during its opening weekend, and crossed the 1 billion yen mark within its first four days. By day 10, it had reached the 1.5 billion yen milestone, with the 1 million viewer mark now within sight.
This is the first new film in the series in approximately 13 years, following Rebellion in 2013. To celebrate the release, some theaters held “fastest screenings” starting at midnight on opening day, and the first weekend featured stage greetings with cast and staff, as well as live viewing events at theaters nationwide.
During the second weekend, on September 5 and 6, costume character greetings were held at theaters in Kyoto, Umeda, and Hiroshima. The excitement surrounding the long-awaited new film continues to build as it moves into its second week.
