The upcoming film Eiga Meitantei Purikyua! Fushigi na Niwa to Futari no Himitsu is set for nationwide release on September 18, 2026. Ahead of the opening, the production team has shared five character design sheets for the movie’s original characters—girl Karin and the fairies Aran and Rein—along with fresh insights into how their looks were crafted.
Karin: An Ordinary Girl with Deliberate Details
Karin, the girl who holds the key to the film’s story, is a regular girl who is good at making sweets. Character designer Miyamoto Emiko recalls that because Karin was not intended to have any “overpowering traits,” finding the right balance in her design proved challenging. Director Ueda Hanako specifically requested a character who would feel like an everyday person—approachable and grounded.
To achieve that, Miyamoto added subtle touches: a faint pink gradient only at the ends of her hair, a heart-shaped bun in her hair arrangement, and other nuanced features. She also gave Karin longer bangs to reflect current trends and a sense of cuteness.
Aran and Rein: Mirror-Image Fairies
For Aran, the fairy who cherishes Karin and always watches over her, and Rein, the client fairy who asks the Purikyua Detective Agency to protect the hopeless Karin, Miyamoto also revealed the inspiration behind their designs. Director Ueda initially suggested an image based on Siberian huskies for their fairy forms. Miyamoto then designed them as complementary opposites, with hair flow and silhouettes deliberately reversed to convey their relationship.
The human forms follow the same logic. Rein wears a neatly tied tie, while Aran has his collar loosened, creating a visible contrast through clothing and hair. The capes, requested by the director, play an important role in the story, but Miyamoto adjusted them so they would not look too much like knightly armor. She said she tuned the styling to make the capes feel casual rather than overpowering.
For Rein’s outfit, Miyamoto explained that a strictly formal composition—vest and shirt—would have made him look like a butler. So she added belt-like ornaments on both sides to inject playfulness and a sense of everyday wear. The intent behind these contrasting details is to make their personalities shine through, and the resulting setting art deepens anticipation for how the two will act in the film.
New Scene Cuts Highlight Character Emotions
Three new scene stills have also been released. One captures Karin gathering courage and taking a step forward, another shows Aran standing protectively in front of a frightened Karin with quiet determination, and a third depicts Rein looking at Karin with a gentle yet somewhat fragile expression. As the feelings of Karin, Aran, and Rein intersect, the story moves toward a major turning point—what “answer” awaits them in the movie is now a question audiences will want to see unfold on the big screen.
