Episode 13 of the summer anime Mushoku Tensei III ~Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu~, titled “Diary,” aired on September 20, 2026, at 24:00, and the internet is still reeling from the emotional gut-punch. Fans who had been bracing for this episode took to social media with reactions ranging from “I thought my heart was going to collapse” to “Thank you for animating this.”
The series, based on the web novel by Rifujin na Magonote that began on Shousetsuka ni Narou in 2012, follows the reincarnation of a 34-year-old hikikomori as Rudeus Greyrat in a fantasy world. The third season, which started on July 5, 2026, covers the Eris training arc and the Chaos Breaker arc, where the mysterious old Rudeus revealed a devastating future in the previous episode.
Ahead of the broadcast, the original author posted on X, “I’m going to buy a strong drink to endure today’s Mushoku Tensei. I’ll drink it when I can’t bear it anymore.” The ominous warning set the tone for what was to come.
A Grim Start: Roxy’s Illness
In the episode, a dead cat is found near Rudeus’s home, and Aisha reports a strange rat behind the house. Soon, Roxy collapses and is diagnosed with Magic Stone Disease—a terminal illness that slowly turns the body into magical stone. Fans were immediately shaken: “They really open with that?!” “This is brutal,” and “My stomach hurts already.”
This is the “extremely cruel future” old Rudeus had described. Viewers realized the entire episode would be a visual recounting of the diary’s contents.
Rudeus, determined to save Roxy, travels to the Millis Holy Country with Cliff and Zanoba to obtain a sacred text containing a detoxification spell. Despite obtaining it, they are ambushed; Cliff is mortally wounded, and Rudeus kills a person for the first time. Cliff dies, and Rudeus returns home exhausted—only to find Roxy has already passed away.
Worse still, Rudeus’s emotional spiral leads him to alcohol and a night with a prostitute, which Sylphie witnesses. She confronts him with “Why can’t it be me?” and leaves days later.
Sylphie’s Fate and Hitogami’s Confession
Sylphie joins Ariel on her journey to the Asura Kingdom, which descends into a violent succession struggle. Ariel is rumored to be executed, and Sylphie is stoned by the crowd. Rudeus’s grief consumes him, and later, Nanahoshi’s fate is revealed as she takes her own life. Only Aisha remains loyal, but even she eventually leaves.
Then Hitogami appears, claiming he wanted to say goodbye. In a shocking confession, he tells Rudeus, “Thanks to you, I managed to kill Roxy. She was pregnant, you know.” With a pat on the shoulder, Hitogami disappears, leaving Rudeus shattered.
Rudeus vows to find and kill Hitogami. He captures Eris and presses her for information, but she remains silent. Upon returning home, he finds the house in flames—Aisha and Zanoba have already been lost. The tragedies pile up without relief.
Eris’s Sacrifice
Seeking answers from the immortal race, Rudeus confronts Atoufe. Though stronger than before, he is caught off guard, and Eris steps in to shield him— sacrificing her life. Later, Girenu tells Rudeus, “She just wanted to be by your side.” The realization comes too late, and Rudeus decides to travel back in time to thwart Hitogami.
The episode drew overwhelming reactions. While some fans wrote, “This is the hardest I’ve ever watched an anime” and “I thought my heart was going to be crushed,” others praised the adaptation’s fidelity and its original touches: “The final anime-original scene was brilliant—thank you,” and “They animated everything, and I’m so grateful.”
The next episode, titled “Kakugo” (Resolve), will air next Sunday.
