Sumikko Gurashi will mark its 15th character anniversary in 2027, and that milestone year will bring the fifth Eiga Sumikko Gurashi film. Announced as the series’ culmination, the new movie is titled Eiga Sumikko Gurashi 5 (Kari) and is scheduled for a 2027 nationwide release. Author Yokomizo Yuri has shared a celebratory illustration for the announcement.
A series that found a home in the corner
Sumikko Gurashi centers on characters who feel oddly calm when they are in a corner. Slightly negative but highly individual, they have found fans among children and adults alike. The cast includes the cold-sensitive shirokuma, the confidence-lacking penguin?, the leftover(?) tonkatsu, the shy neko, and the tokage, who hides its true identity. Their relatable personalities let many fans see a bit of themselves in them.
The theatrical anime series sends these Sumikko characters out of their usual corner and into a range of big-screen stories. It began with the 2019 first film, Eiga Sumikko Gurashi Tobidasu Ehon to Himitsu no Ko, which drew attention for a story that unexpectedly moved adults to tears. The series has since become a major hit, with cumulative attendance surpassing 3.5 million.
Each film has placed one Sumikko character at the center of its story. In the illustration released with the fifth film announcement, penguin?, tokage, shirokuma, and tonkatsu are shown holding numbers decorated with memorable motifs from their own stories, clutching them carefully to their chests.
The fifth film will finally give the last main character, neko, a turn. True to the shy neko, the character stands in the foreground with blushing cheeks, urged on by the close friend zassou. The number 5 that neko holds is still pure white. Just what kind of story will mark this series milestone? Expectations are only growing.
Second film returns for a blue full-moon anniversary
Starting October 31, 2026, the 2021 second film Eiga Sumikko Gurashi Aoi Tsukiyo no Mahou no Ko will return for an anniversary screening as the first event celebrating Sumikko Gurashi’s 15th anniversary. The event is titled Eiga Sumikko Gurashi Aoi Tsukiyo no Mahou no Ko ＜Are kara 5-nen＞ Aoi Daimangetsu no Anniversary Jouei. Echoing the legend that magic users come to town and grant dreams, those magic users will meet the Sumikko again after five years.
The anniversary screening will include the main film plus newly produced footage created for the occasion, so audiences are encouraged to stay in their seats through the end credits. An admission gift has also been decided: a postcard featuring a newly drawn illustration that shows the Sumikko and the magic users reunited after five years.

Eiga Sumikko Gurashi 5 (Kari) is set for a 2027 nationwide roadshow. The anniversary screening of Eiga Sumikko Gurashi Aoi Tsukiyo no Mahou no Ko will run for four days only, from October 31 to November 3, at 82 theaters nationwide. Details are available on the official site.
