Mononoke Hime
Synopsis
Ashitaka, a young man from the Emishi tribe dwelling in the northern reaches, bravely fires an arrow to protect his village from a rampaging boar that has transformed into a dreadful Tatarigami (demon god). However, in doing so, he incurs a deadly curse. Hii-sama, the village shaman, foretells that the only way to break this curse lies in the West. Thus, Ashitaka embarks on a perilous journey.
Along his travels, Ashitaka encounters a mysterious man named Jiko-bou, who tells him about the “Tatara-ba,” an ironworks settlement, and the “Shishigami no Mori” (Forest of the Shishigami), which governs all life.
Believing that the iron bullet he found in the Tatarigami’s body originated from the Tatara-ba, Ashitaka hastens his journey westward towards the settlement. During his travels, he rescues Kouroku, a man collapsed on the riverbank after being attacked by dog-gods. It is then that Ashitaka encounters San, a young girl raised by these dog-gods.
San, who harbors deep hatred for humans, orders Ashitaka to leave the forest. With Kouroku in tow, Ashitaka proceeds to the Tatara-ba, where Kouroku works.
Eboshi Gozen, the formidable leader of the Tatara-ba, welcomes Ashitaka. She has established a unique community for women, the sick, and others marginalized by society, offering them a place to live and thrive. However, to achieve her goals, she has been cutting down the forest, incurring the wrath of San and her guardian, Moro no Kimi, a powerful dog-god who raised her.
That very night, San, fueled by her desire for vengeance against Eboshi Gozen, launches an attack on the Tatara-ba. Ashitaka, attempting to stop their fierce battle, is struck by a bullet from a flintlock rifle. Despite his severe injuries, he desperately tries to carry the wounded San back to the Shishigami no Mori. Exhausted, he eventually loses consciousness…
