CLAMP’s Mahou Kishi Rayearth is returning to anime more than 30 years later, with Sakura Ayane, Okubo Rumi, and Takahashi Rie in the main cast and a broadcast start set for October 7. As the beloved creative group’s work comes back into the spotlight, one title in its catalog remains especially hard to shake: xxxHOLiC.
The strange intoxication of xxxHOLiC
Spending time with xxxHOLiC can make you feel… drunk. Not literally, of course. It is more like the moment in a dream, or late at night after too many waking hours, when reality grows thin and the back of your mind starts to float. It is frightening. It is bewitching. It is beautiful. And somehow, it is deeply comfortable. Before you know it, you are completely drunk on the world of xxxHOLiC.
CLAMP works each have their own intense personality, but few carry the same gravitational pull as xxxHOLiC‘s atmosphere itself.
Wishes, prices, and inevitable encounters
The protagonist is Watanuki Kimihiro, a high school student troubled by a body that attracts ayakashi. One day, he steps into a strange mise run by Ichihara Yuuko, an alluring woman who grants visitors’ wishes in exchange for a price of equal value. The series is filled with lines that are difficult to fully understand at first yet somehow lodge in the heart, including the idea that there are no coincidences in this world, only inevitability.
The ayakashi in xxxHOLiC are not simply monsters meant to scare people. The stories also portray people who cannot stop lying, people who sink too far into the internet, and people who cling to their wishes. What emerges is the human heart, which can be more terrifying and troublesome than any supernatural being.
People say they want to stop but cannot. They wish to change but do nothing to change themselves. The reason these moments sting is that they are not confined to fiction. Even as times change, human desire and attachment do not change so easily. That is why an episode once watched in the past can suddenly press in with a different meaning after growing up.
Even before such people, Yuuko does not hand out easy answers. With long black hair, gorgeous clothing, and a kiseru pipe in hand, she cuts a bewitching figure. She seems to see through everything, yet she drinks and makes unreasonable demands of Watanuki. She is elusive, suspicious, and impossible to look away from.
Her words carry a certain severity. Wishing alone changes nothing. To gain something, something of equal value is needed. In the end, it is up to you to choose and to change. As a child, these lines may have seemed simply deep. With age, they sink in uncomfortably. That may be another reason xxxHOLiC is a work to savor again and again.
Where everyday life and the otherworld blur
The look that surrounds the story is just as striking. Limbs stretch long, characters are boldly deformed, and the colors are mysterious, setting the series apart from both shoujo and shounen manga. The atmosphere is so quiet it feels uneasy, as if an otherworld is opening its mouth right beside daily life. The visuals are not realistic; if anything, they are distorted. Yet that distortion is pleasant. Looking at them, your sense of distance begins to warp, and you start to feel as if you have wandered into Yuuko’s mise.
What makes it even more interesting is that the series does not stay heavy all the time. Watanuki’s lively reactions and his interactions with his classmates Doumeki Shizuka and Kunogi Himawari often bring laughter.
Then, while you are enjoying the slapstick daily life, you are suddenly led into a chilling world of ayakashi. The border between the two is so ambiguous that viewers are drawn into the work’s atmosphere without realizing it.
When you return from the story to everyday life, the world looks slightly different. There might be an unknown mise just around the corner of a familiar street. Even a casual habit might hide an obsession you have not noticed in yourself. That, for me, is the intoxication of xxxHOLiC.
Strong, comfortable, and impossible to leave
It is intense, yet somehow comfortable. It is frightening, yet you do not want to leave. And after stepping out of the story, Yuuko’s words remain somewhere in the corner of your mind. Once you enter, it will not let you go back sober. Even now, there are times when I feel an irresistible urge to be drunk on that bewitching, beautiful world.
