Volks’ high-end beautiful girl figure brand Zettai Ryouiki has unveiled a 1/4 scale kit of Makinami Mari Illustrious from Evangelion Shin Gekijouban. The figure is set for an advance preview at Hobby Round 35 on November 7 (Sat), with preorders opening in stages afterward.

Evangelion’s 30th anniversary and Zettai Ryouiki
Evangelion began as the 1995 TV anime Shinseiki Evangelion. In 2007, it restarted as the Evangelion Shin Gekijouban series, with Anno Hideaki serving as planner, scriptwriter, and chief director. After Jo, Ha, and Q, the concluding film Shin Evangelion Gekijouban opened in 2021. It earned 10.28 billion yen at the box office and drew 6.73 million admissions.
The 30th anniversary festival event ‘EVANGELION:30+; 30th ANNIVERSARY OF EVANGELION’ ran from February 21 to 23, 2026 at Yokohama Arena. The three-day event attracted about 30,000 visitors from Japan and overseas.
Zettai Ryouiki, Volks’ top-tier beautiful girl sculpting brand tied to the Evangelion series, released Ayanami Rei in 2006 and Souryuu Asuka Langley in 2018. Now, in 2026, as the franchise marks its 30th anniversary, Mari has finally joined the lineup.

A sculpt built to the limit
With the motto ‘sculpt sensibility to the extreme,’ departments across Volks pooled their efforts. The result of repeated trial and error is a new, ultimate three-dimensional form intended to deliver Zettai Ryouiki’s sense of beauty and spatial composition to everyone who holds it.
The kit thoroughly reproduces Mari’s ennui-filled expression behind her glasses, her healthy body line, and the texture of her plug suit. It also incorporates the design of Evangelion Unit 08, which fought alongside Mari from the US operation through the fierce battle at Central Dogma and the final Yamato operation, suffering damage many times but fighting to the last moment. Bold sculpting and skillful spatial composition give the piece a one-of-a-kind presence.

As Mari describes herself in the film, her full bust is a key highlight. Because her plug suit is simpler than those of Rei and Asuka previously released by Zettai Ryouiki, special attention was paid to making the breasts look natural and beautifully shaped. The seductive detail from her exposed navel down through her lower body is also striking.

The hair, shown as if flowing in the wind, creates an impression of freshness that contrasts with Mari’s mysterious nature, acting as a refreshing touch. The sculptural expression of armor being purged from the center outward and fading out is emphasized by varying the paint on the clear armor parts.

The base evokes rubble of artificial objects from the collapsed world after Third Impact, and the contrast in texture with the soft-looking bare skin is striking. The sculpt of the roaring Evangelion Unit 08 head, which fought alongside Mari to the end, is another highlight.

The weapon is based on Evangelion Unit 08’s Anti-Gigantes Rifle, with details such as weld and casting marks that make it resemble a real gun. The cartridge section follows the setting and is recreated with disc-shaped clear parts inspired by an A.T. Field.

These are parts that will not be visible after completion, but this attention to hidden areas is the true essence of Zoukei-mura sculptors. The mechanical sections evoke ‘hard points,’ with hole-like designs sculpted throughout to suggest expandability.
A special Volks example finishes the kit with a ‘Dolly Make’ using the included special ‘resin eye’ part. Careful layers of shadow and gradation are used to bring out a natural expression and three-dimensionality, with particular focus on skin shading.

This approach offers a different charm from a ‘figure example’ that matches the original anime image, emphasizing the eyeline and eyes for impact even from a distance. Even with the same kit, the expression changes completely depending on the maker, so deciding what kind of expression to give Mari is part of the enjoyment.

The 1/4 scale’s power and three-dimensionality are unique to Zettai Ryouiki, and the included special ‘resin eye’ part adds depth to the pupils. By combining ‘shadow-conscious eyeliner and false eyelashes,’ the kit achieves a realistic gaze that suggests strength of will.
For those seeking an expression closer to the original, a resin part compatible with the eye decals is also provided. Owners can enjoy an expression suited to their own sensibility.

Preview and preorder schedule
To coincide with the kit’s order period, events will be held where the painted completed example can be seen in person. After the advance preview at Volks’ Hobby Round 35, the display will tour three cities nationwide. During each period, the exhibit is scheduled to change from the regular finished product to the ‘Dolly Make’ example.
