Visual Arts/Key announced on October 19, 2026 that Maeda Jun, the creator known for CLANNAD, Little Busters!, Angel Beats!, and other works, has been diagnosed with pharyngeal cancer. The announcement, titled ‘Important Notice Regarding Maeda Jun,’ also outlined his outlook for future creative work.
Key shared the news through its official X account: announcement post.
According to the statement, Maeda began feeling discomfort in his throat in early spring this year. The symptoms became stronger by summer, and a detailed examination at a medical institution resulted in the diagnosis.
Maeda is currently writing scenarios and music for Heaven Burns Red, the smartphone game currently in service and described as his first completely new smartphone game in 15 years. He had also been developing ideas for a new music project. After considering his condition and treatment options, he has decided not to pursue aggressive treatment. Instead, he will proceed with palliative care-centered recuperation, hoping to conserve his strength and devote himself to creative work.
Heaven Burns Red Work Status
The announcement provided details on his ongoing contributions. For Heaven Burns Red, Maeda has finished writing his assigned portions of the main story through the first half of Chapter 6, as well as all major story parts leading to the conclusion of Chapter 6. He has also completed the lyrics and composition for the music in the first half of Chapter 6.
For scenarios and music beyond that, the statement notes that ‘there is a possibility that Maeda himself will be unable to work on them due to the progression of his symptoms.’
New Music Project
For the new music project, Maeda had planned a long-term rollout on YouTube. Because he feels ‘there is not much time left to produce,’ he has changed course to complete the songs he is currently envisioning as quickly as possible and deliver them to fans. At his strong request, the songs will be released sequentially on YouTube.
The announcement was also shared on X: second post.
Messages for Maeda
The document also says that while Maeda cannot reply to each message individually, words of encouragement and letters are being accepted. An address is provided, along with the note, ‘We will deliver the messages we receive to him.’
The statement apologizes to fans and involved parties for the sudden announcement and closes by saying, ‘Maeda is currently hospitalized, but even in that situation he has a strong wish to focus on creative work until the end. We would be grateful if you could warmly watch over those feelings.’
