The Allure of Contrast: Characters with Extreme Dual Personalities

Highly popular characters in anime and games often hide “surprising sides” that can’t be easily summed up in a single word.

They might be perfect at work but sloppy in their private life, seem intimidating but are surprisingly caring, usually quiet but become chatterboxes on their favorite topic, or appear shallow but are deeply loyal… Among these characters who shine because of their contrasts, who is currently capturing everyone’s attention?

With that in mind, Anime! Anime! conducted a reader survey titled “Which character has the most extreme gap between their public and private sides?”.
The voting period ran from January 20th to January 23rd. The gender ratio was approximately 40% male and 60% female, with slightly more female participants. The age demographic was about 40% under 19, with 20s and 30s each comprising roughly 20%.

First Place

First place went to Agatsuma Zenitsu from Kimetsu no Yaiba. His support rate was approximately 10%.

Agatsuma Zenitsu is a Demon Slayer Corps swordsman who uses “Thunder Breathing” and is a contemporary of the protagonist, Kamado Tanjirou. Readers commented, “He’s cowardly and doesn’t want to go on missions, always screaming and seeming unreliable. But when cornered, he shows a different, powerful side—that’s his charm. The motion of closing his eyes and entering the ‘Thunderclap and Flash’ stance is irresistible!” and “While he’s extremely fearful, when he falls asleep from terror, he displays his true strength. In ‘The Infinity Castle Arc Chapter 1,’ he showed an angry expression you’d never imagine from his usual goofy self, which made me fall for him all over again.” His recent exploits in the latest work boosted his popularity. He gathered votes for his dependable ability to turn the tables at the last moment.

Second Place

Second place was Sakata Gintoki from Gintama. His support rate was approximately 8%.

Sakata Gintoki is the leader of the Odd Jobs Gin-chan. Readers said, “He’s always broke, constantly behind on rent. He causes problems by getting drunk and messing up or being rude to the Shogun. But when his friends are in a pinch, he helps them without regard for his own safety. It’s no wonder everyone looks up to him as ‘Gin-san.'” and “He usually has dead-fish eyes, but in battle scenes, his expression sharpens, and the past where he was feared as the ‘Shiroyasha’ comes alive.” This protagonist, who is the most reliable person when it matters most, ranked in. He’s also likely to hype things up at crucial moments in the upcoming film, Shin Gekijouban Gintama -Yoshiwara Daienjou-, set for release on February 13th.

Third Place

Third place was Fukuhara Tamon from Tamon-kun Ima Docchi!?. His support rate was approximately 5%.

Fukuhara Tamon is a member of the idol group “F/ACE.” A reader noted, “On stage, he’s a sexy & wild perfect idol, but his real face is that of a zero self-esteem ‘gloomy introvert.’ Isn’t this ‘Gimehara-san’ currently the character with the most extreme gap?” propelling him from the currently airing series into the top three.
Votes also came in for the protagonist, Kinoshita Utae, who ends up working part-time at Tamon’s house. “She won’t forgive anyone who badmouths her favorite idol, even if it’s the idol himself! All the characters in ‘Tamon-kun’ have intense ON/OFF switches, but I think she might actually be the most extreme.” showing that readers are enjoying the wide range of personalities in the series as a whole.

For Shinomiya Kaguya from Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai: Tensai-tachi no Renai Zunousen (also known as Kaguya-sama: Love Is War): “Because in her internal court, various Kaguyas like ‘Kaguya (Ice)’ and ‘Kaguya (Idiot)’ were arguing. She sometimes becomes an SD character too, so I thought she really has many faces.” Votes also came in for this title, for which a Final Chapter adaptation has been decided.
