A trailer for the 4K version of Mamoru Hosoda’s film “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time” has been released, and screenings have been confirmed at 161 theaters nationwide, including additional venues. The revival screening will begin on July 3, 2026 (Friday).

The anime film “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time,” directed by Mamoru Hosoda, is based on the original work by Yasutaka Tsutsui and depicts the coming-of-age and growth of a modern girl living in the present. The story follows high school girl Makoto, who gains the ability to time leap into the past, and as she redoes her own past, she discovers the meaning of “irreplaceable moments in life.”
The vibrant animation and fresh narrative captured the hearts of many audiences. Starting from just six theaters at the time of its release in July 2006, word of mouth gradually expanded screenings nationwide, eventually reaching over 100 theaters and achieving a long-run screening of approximately 40 weeks. It also garnered numerous international accolades, including an award at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival.

Twenty years after its 2006 release, a 4K screening has been decided as part of the revival screening project by “Filmarks,” Japan’s largest movie, drama, and anime review service. This time, the 4K trailer has been released.
While preserving the original color design, the latest technology has been used to pursue the utmost transparency of the image. By thoroughly removing noise and color muddying that covered the entire image, the fine details of the town, the depth of the summer sky, and the background intricacies have been revived with greater clarity and sharpness.

Rather than flashy color correction, the focus is on drawing out the original beauty of the image, recreating a “vivid summer” with high definition that makes you feel as if you are there. This is a rare opportunity to enjoy the film on the big screen with even greater immersion than before.

The trailer will be sequentially shown at each screening theater and is also available on the Filmarks official YouTube channel. Additionally, from May 20 (Wednesday), TikTok video posts for “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time” have started. Following the currently posted 4K trailer, famous scenes from the main film are scheduled to be posted.

Furthermore, the second wave of screening theaters has been announced, with 14 additional theaters nationwide, bringing the total to 161 theaters. More screenings are expected to be added in the future, and the latest information can be checked on the official Filmarks Revival X account.
