The original anime film Chou Kaguya-hime! is set to release on Blu-ray on September 9, 2026. Additional preorders for the highly sought-after limited edition will begin today, May 28, at 18:00 JST, exclusively through the official store.
Directed by Yamashita Seigo in his feature-length debut, Chou Kaguya-hime! is a music animation project featuring songs from renowned Vocaloid producers: ryo (supercell), kz (livetune), 40mP, HoneyWorks, Aqu3ra, and yuigot. The film tells the story of girls connected through song in the virtual world “Tsukuyomi,” with high-energy live stages and emotional visuals. Animation production is a collaboration between Studio Colorido (known for Penguin Highway and A Whisker Away) and Studio Chromato, Yamashita’s own studio.
The film initially streamed worldwide exclusively on Netflix and later received a theatrical run starting February 20. The theatrical release saw immediate sellouts, leading to extended screenings and expanded venues. By April 20, the film had surpassed 1 million attendees and 2 billion yen in box office revenue.
Blu-ray Editions and Additional Preorders
The Blu-ray will be available in two editions: a limited edition (16,800 yen) and a regular edition (6,800 yen). The limited edition includes a wealth of extras: a cut-scene-added version of the film, character commentary, the “Reply (Kaguya & Ayaha ver.)” music video, a bonus CD with 11 songs plus the aforementioned track, a special booklet, and a newly illustrated jacket by Tsukuyomi character designer Hechima.
Initial preorders for the limited edition sold out quickly after opening on May 14. In response, production was ramped up, and additional preorders are now possible. However, due to material and logistics constraints, delivery will be split into two batches:
- Shipments starting September 9 (after release date)
- Shipments starting late October onward
Each batch is limited to 100,000 units, making a total of 200,000 units available through this additional preorder window. Orders will be taken from May 28, 18:00, until June 11, 18:00. If the number of orders exceeds the limit before the deadline, additional purchase pages may be opened. The only product available is the “Blu-ray Official Store Limited Special Set.”
