A new series of jigsaw puzzles combining the beloved characters of Doraemon with classic ukiyo-e woodblock prints has been announced. Produced by the online shop “Hanzan Ukiyo-e Studio” (版三 浮世絵工房), the two puzzles go on sale May 29, 2026. Each puzzle uses Echizen washi paper, a traditional Japanese handmade paper, to replicate the texture and feel of an actual ukiyo-e print.
New Ukiyo-E Puzzles Featuring Doraemon Characters
These are the latest additions to the popular “Doraemon Ukiyo-e Echizen Washi Puzzle” line. Both are 300-piece jigsaw puzzles. One is based on Katsushika Hokusai’s Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji: Koshu Kajikazawa, and the other on Utagawa Hiroshige’s One Hundred Famous Views of Edo: Sudden Shower over Shin-Ohashi Bridge and Atake.

Hokusai’s masterpiece from his iconic series features a bold use of “bero ai” (Berlin blue) — a vivid shade that sparked the “Blue Revolution” in the West. The puzzle incorporates Nobita and Doraemon into the scene, highlighting their trusting relationship within the composition.
Doraemon Ukiyo-e Echizen Washi Puzzle: “One Hundred Famous Views of Edo: Sudden Shower over Shin-Ohashi Bridge and Atake”
Hiroshige’s late-career masterpiece depicts people hurrying across a bridge in a sudden evening shower. The print was famously copied by Vincent van Gogh. In this version, Doraemon and friends rush through the rain, adding a humorous touch to the classic landscape.
Echizen Washi Puzzle Development
The key feature of these puzzles is that they are the first in Japan to use Echizen washi paper for jigsaw puzzles. To achieve the texture of a woodblock print and the unique feel of washi, the studio spent about a year on trial production and testing. They overcame challenges in paper selection, color development, ink adhesion, printing compatibility, and coating. The result is a puzzle that preserves the washi’s natural unevenness and fiber texture while remaining easy to assemble. Finished puzzles give the tactile sensation of touching a real ukiyo-e woodblock print.
