Get ready for something special! The acclaimed animation director, Natume Shingo, is finally bringing us his highly anticipated latest work: an original theatrical anime film titled ghost (working title). The movie is set to premiere in 2027.
The animation production is handled by Maddohausu, the renowned studio known for countless masterpieces, while the character concepts come from manga artist Ono Natume. To kick things off, the production decision visual for the film has just been unveiled!
About the Director
Natume Shingo first stepped into the director’s chair for a TV series with Supeesu☆Dandyi. Since then, he’s directed numerous anime, both original works and adaptations, including hits like Wanpanman, AKKA 13-ku Kansatsuka, Sonny Boy, and Yojouhan Taimu Mashin Buruusu. With his first original TV anime, Sonny Boy, Natume-kantoku really let his unique artistic vision shine, creating an unparalleled animated experience that sparked considerable buzz.
His talent hasn’t gone unnoticed on the world stage either; Sonny Boy was nominated in the TV series competition category at the Anushii Kokusai Animeeshon Eigasai, one of the largest animation festivals globally. Now, with ghost (working title), he’s making his long-awaited debut with an original feature-length theatrical anime.

The Creative Team
For ghost (working title), the animation production is in the hands of Maddohausu. This legendary studio has brought us timeless films like Kon Satoshi’s Sennen Joyuu and Papurika, as well as Hosoda Mamoru’s Samaa Woozu. Maddohausu has also collaborated with Natume-kantoku many times before, making this a natural fit.
Adding to the stellar lineup, manga artist Ono Natume is providing the original character concepts, with Kugai Norifumi handling the character design. This powerful team previously worked together on the TV anime AKKA 13-ku Kansatsuka, and they are now working hard to bring this new project to life.

A Glimpse into the World
Along with the announcement, the production decision visual was revealed. It features a mysterious girl named Nike, gripping a glass sword and gazing straight ahead with determined eyes. Behind her, a starry sky blends with vibrant, colorful flowers, hinting at the beginning of an intriguing story.
Natume-kantoku shared his ambition for the film, stating, “Through animation, which could be called fiction, I aim to create a work that pursues realism and reflects the current era.” He suggests that the “ghost” residing within everyone’s heart refers to genuine feelings that can’t be put into words, yet are undeniably present. The story promises to be a challenging and lyrical portrayal of the loneliness and courage of the girl Nike, who rebels against the world’s irrationality to protect the “starry sky,” and the subtle shifts in her heart as she interacts with others.

Looking Ahead
ghost (working title) is currently in production, with creators who resonate with the project working towards its theatrical release in 2027. The film is also making waves internationally. At the market (MIFA) accompanying the Anushii Kokusai Animeeshon Eigasai currently being held in France, posters of the production decision visual will be displayed, and a project pitch session is scheduled starting June 10th. Keep an eye out for more updates on this project that is already generating global anticipation!
