Work Overview
`Kishibe Rohan wa Ugokanai` is a live-action adaptation based on the brilliant spin-off manga born from Hirohiko Araki’s immensely popular `JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken` series, which boasts over 120 million copies in circulation. The story follows Kishibe Rohan, a popular manga artist endowed with the special ability “Heaven’s Door,” which allows him to turn people into books, read their past and secrets, and even write commands into them, as he confronts bizarre incidents.
Starring Takahashi Issei in the lead role, the series was first adapted into a drama in December 2020. This was followed by a second season the next year, and a third in 2022. From its first broadcast, which topped trending lists, it continued to trend daily on social media with each new episode. Many original fans praised its quality, calling it “the ideal live-action adaptation” and “too perfect.”
Due to its popularity and overwhelming response, the team behind the live-action drama reunited to produce the first feature film, `Kishibe Rohan Louvre e Iku`, which premiered on May 26, 2023. It became a huge hit, attracting over 900,000 viewers and grossing approximately 1.25 billion yen.
And now, `Kishibe Rohan wa Ugokanai Zangeshitsu`, released on May 23, 2025, is here. This film adapts the legendary “Confessional” episode, a fan-favorite and the very first story from the original manga. Shot entirely on location in Venice – a first for a Japanese film – it brings the story to life on the grandest scale ever imagined.
Synopsis
While in a church in Venice, manga artist Kishibe Rohan overhears the terrifying confession of a masked man. It’s a tale of a curse placed upon him after he accidentally killed a vagrant: the curse of experiencing “despair” at the peak of his happiness.
Having lived his life desperately trying to escape happiness, the man one day feels “true happiness” while watching his daughter play innocently.
At that very moment, the vagrant, who was supposed to be dead, reappears and challenges him to a trial involving popcorn. “If you can throw popcorn and catch it in your mouth three times in a row, my curse will disappear. But if you fail, you must accept the greatest despair…”
Rohan, engrossed in the bizarre confession, cannot resist using his special ability to turn people into books and read their memories and experiences…
Eventually, he realizes that a “curse of happiness” is also closing in on him.
