Kyoto’s Arashiyama district is getting a dose of retro kawaii: a permanent Monchhichi pop-up corner is opening at the matcha sweets shop Sawayawa (茶和々) on June 26, 2026. Alongside the new space, a never-before-seen limited edition plush—the Matcha Monchhichi—will go on sale exclusively at the store.
Monchhichi, first released by Sekiguchi Co., Ltd. in 1974, quickly became a global phenomenon thanks to its signature pacifier pose, soft body, and vinyl face and limbs. The brand has remained beloved for decades, and this collaboration brings the character into the world of premium Uji matcha.
Inside the shop, a specially designed corner blends modern Japanese aesthetics with the natural beauty of Arashiyama’s bamboo groves. Shoppers will find exclusive items such as the “Okoicha Monchhichi Mascot Keychain” (¥2,970) and the “Tea Picking Monchhichi Mascot Keychain” (¥3,300), both capturing the essence of matcha culture.
The collaboration was born from a desire to offer visitors from Japan and abroad a unique sensory experience that goes beyond shopping—a memorable stop on any Arashiyama itinerary.
