The light novel series Class de 2-banme ni Kawaii Onnanoko to Tomodachi ni Natta (I Became Friends with the Second Cutest Girl in the Class.) is coming to a close. The official X account for illustrator Azuri Hyuuga announced on Wednesday that the series will end with its tenth volume, scheduled for release on July 1.
Writer Takata started posting the romantic comedy on Kakuyomu in November 2020. Kadokawa picked it up for print under the Sneaker Bunko imprint in December 2021, with illustrations by Tom Osabe. After the first volume, Azuri Hyuuga replaced Osabe as illustrator due to various circumstances. The ninth volume dropped on April 1. According to the series’ official X account, the light novels have a combined 1.6 million copies in circulation, including digital editions.
Manga and English Release
A manga adaptation, drawn by Rin Ono, began serializing on Kadokawa’s Alive+ web service in July 2022. Kadokawa published the manga’s seventh volume on December 26, with the eighth volume due out on June 26. Yen Press licensed the manga in English in December 2024 and shipped the second volume in November 2025. The third English volume is expected on June 23.
Awards and Anime
The series won the Special Prize in the Romantic Comedy category of the 6th Kakuyomu Web Novel Contest. In the Next Light Novel Award paperback category, it ranked seventh in 2022 and climbed to first place in 2023. Kadokawa also named it the best-selling new light novel series of 2022. A 12-episode television anime adaptation produced by Connect premiered in Spring 2026. Crunchyroll simulcast the anime with subtitles in multiple languages.
Synopsis
The story follows Maehara Maki, a high school student who struggles to make friends. His life changes when he meets Asanagi, a girl secretly called the “second cutest girl in class” by the boys. Instead of spending time with her best friend Amami (the “cutest girl”), Asanagi chooses to hang out with Maki on Fridays. At his home, they play games, watch movies, read manga, and eat junk food, sharing a cherished secret bond that the outside world never sees.
