A Timeless Classic

Created by Ikeda Riyoko, the manga Versailles no Bara vividly portrays the love and lives of people struggling through revolutionary France. It was first serialized in Weekly Margaret (Shueisha) in 1972 and has since sold over 20 million copies in total. Oscar, a beautiful noblewoman raised as a son and heir, transcends class and gender to choose her own path, earning the sympathy and admiration of many readers.

The series garnered an enthusiastic following from the start, leading to stage adaptations by the Takarazuka Revue and a TV anime that became a social phenomenon in Japan. A brand-new theatrical anime was released on January 31, 2025.

About Oscar

Oscar François de Jarjayes is the youngest daughter of a distinguished aristocratic and military family, but she was raised as the family’s male heir. A beautiful woman in masculine attire, she serves as the Colonel of the French Royal Guard, tasked with protecting Marie Antoinette. She has known André, the grandson of her wet nurse, since childhood.
